We love our Keurig but are questioning the warning label re; lead!

by KCee
(Long Branch, NJ)

My husband and I love our Keurig..we are both on the go so the convienence and flavor is awesome. However, recently, someone called my attention to the warning on page 3 in the owners manual. It is very disturbing and would like to know if anyone else is concerned and if there is any real reason to be alarmed? Anyone??

It's going back to the store

Worst coffee ever tasted!
Such a pity…love the machine, it’s very convenient, but Bleggghhh!!! the coffee tastes awful! It leaves a metal aftertaste in your mouth. I used the Timothy coffee that came with the system. I thought I just got bad coffee so I bought a fresh pack. I had the machine for 3 weeks…thought the bad taste would go away but’s not. I’m returning it to the store.

What does it really matter if it causes cancer.
by: Anonymous

Look if you don't feel comfortable using it because of the warning labels then don't use it. I know that half of the people that use them would still continue to use it even if it does cause cancer. Look at all the people that smoke and there is a warning label and they even have proof that smoking causes cancer but thay still continue to fill there lungs with hazardous chemicals year after year no matter what the cost. People are so into there own pleasures to the point that it kills them.

Returning it
by: Anonymous

I bought this mini Keurig with a 30% of coupon at Kohl's. I wanted one for a while and when I got the coupon and found the filter to use your own coffee I decide to go for it. When I opened it and read the booklet I learned about the chemicals and lead. When looking online trying to find out about that I came across review after review of trouble people were having. That, along with the lead, made me weary. I read on and discovered I can't use distilled or reverse osmosis water in the machine. My town uses reverse osmosis on our water. Now I have to buy water to use in it. Decided to give it a try anyway. Used a K-cup that came with it. It was fine. Worked fine. It was average coffee, I thought. Then I tried the filter with Maxwell house coffee from the grocery store. It took twice as much coffee as I usually use to brew a decent cup of coffee. I decided to return it. I think it's a cool idea, but just not worth it. I don't want to buy water, use more coffee grounds, or take a chance with the lead and chemicals or take a chance with it breaking/quitting.

Just wondering.....
by: Anonymous

Just bought a Keurig...Ran it through empty a half dozen times or so and have brewed several cups and it still tastes like plastic? Is it just me? or do other people taste the intense plastic taste at the beginning? I got concerned and read the booklet and saw the warnings about lead. Why don't they use other metals besides lead? Just wondering.

Lead Warning
by: Anonymous

The lead is in the solder used on circuit board and other electrical connections. All electronics that use lead based solder (which is quite a few, though they are starting to switch to lead free see ROHOS standards) will have this warning. If you have an old vcr manual around you should be able to find it in there as well. The pressure vessel and all water paths are steel in order to handle the high pressure generated by rapid heating of the water. You do not have to worry about it unless you plan on chewing on the electronics.

Great concept, but not worth the $$
by: Burned

What a hassle. I too love the concept, but this isn't rocket science and for the price, (including k-cups), I expect the product to function properly for longer than it does. I refuse to jump through customer service hoops and I can't go without my morning cuppa joe. Good job I have my back up Hamilton Beach Stay or Go. I purchased two Keurigs one for me and one as a gift. Waste of $$ - not going for a third!

Lead in Keurig
by: Anonymous

I have been feeling poorly and my doctor just checked me for heavy metals. My lead levels are off scale and the type of test indicates it is ongoing exposure. My friends and I have been wracking our brains trying to figure this out as I am obsessive about not exposing myself to toxins etc. I eat organic food, drink pure water etc am careful with body products and so forth and do not have occupational exposure. But I do drink 3-5 cups of keurig brewed items every single day--tea, coffee, decaf. I am about to have it tested to see if this is the source of exposure. I would recommend that you do the same.

Design Flaws = defective machines.
by: April Cantley

My husband and I purchased our first Keurig coffee machine in January from Bed, Bath & Beyond.

It worked great for 2 months, and then made half sized cups on a frequent basis, but not every time. Sometimes it would brew the full cup.
However, other times we would select the large cup size, and it would brew only half. So we tried pressing the button again, and sometimes it would brew another half cup to make a full cup ...but sometimes it would brew a full cup and overflow. We learned to have a second cup ready if it appeared it was going to overflow, but the problem was that we often got burned with hot water during the switch.

Too many reviews share the same or similar complaint(s). These complaints have established a pattern describing a design flaw/defect that will not be solved with a replacement machine until the defect has been corrected. These design flaws range from machines that stop working -- to machines that brew only a half cup.

I am going to return it.
by: Deborah

I have a large Keurig and have had just before Christmas. I liked it until I finally got the books out and looked at all of them the other day. I found a big bold Word Warning; This contains harmful chemicals including lead which has been known to cause cancer.

I want to know why in the world would they be made having lead in them. I am going to return it.

My friend told me about it and that's when I looked into it.

Don't waste your money or time.
by: Don Blair

I have had 5 Keurig Machines in less than one year. I started off with the machine made for Costco which broke within 2 months. They replaced this machine with another Costco model(free of charge) it lasted 2 weeks. Then then have replaced it free of charge 3 more times with their Platinum edition machine. With each of these machines I went through the whole cleaning process with the vinegar and paper clip with the tech person from Keurig. I was also informed from the get go that I need to clean the machine regularly (they suggest every 3 months, which I have done but if you do the math 12 months divided by 5 machines it don't take a rocket scientist to figure out that they break faster than that. So I went to cleaning it monthly which still resulted in failure.) to use only distilled water and not to use the hot chocolate K-cups (Why make a product for the machine that will damage it?) Do not use the home brew coffee filter to brew your own coffee, use only pre made K-cups.) Once again why make a product that should not be used?)I will have to say that when dealing with customer service the first 4 times they were very friendly and very prompt on getting me a new machine free of charge and that the replacements were delivered very quickly. The last experience with customer service was not the same. They were rude they implied that because I already had 4 machines that I was doing something wrong or that I was actually trying to scam them and get free machines. The tech spoke to me like I was stupid and that i was lying about how I used the machine (using tap water, hot chocolate K-cups). They also then informed me that because I have had so many replacements already that this would be the last replacement. I am sorry I feel that is unacceptable its not my fault they have made a faulty product. As of now my 5th machine after following all of their care instructions it is once again showing the signs that its about to fail. This time however I will not be dealing with Keurig I will be returning it to Costco because they will always take their faulty products back and yes I have been keeping Costco aware of my whole ordeal from the beginning so that it would be on record. Its a shame that this machine is so poorly made I love the concept of it and yes it makes a good cup of coffee when it works but garbage is garbage.

lead warning
by: Anonymous

Purchased coffee maker for Christmas, my husband fell in love with it, I read the instruction label last night and was very concerned about the lead warning, I am a cancer survivor, we will most likely look for a lead free coffee maker. Wish we had known before hand. My husband asked is there lead in other coffee makers like Mr. Coffee? I cannot recall seeing such a warning.

Brand new customer
by: Joyce from San Diego

Just bought a Keurig mini machine today. Tried it twice and loved
the convenience and quality of the coffee. Read all the pamphlets
right after and got very concerned. Warning the purchaser about
lead and other chemicals worries me a great deal. I would not have
purchased it if I new in advance. Wish I had checked customer
reviews prior to purchase. I'm still debating if I will return it.

Called Keurig customer service
by: San Jose, Ca

I too was worried when I saw the Prop 65 warning about the Keurig Mini Cup Brewer containing lead. I wanted to buy it for my little sister for college. I looked all over the Web and could not find anything on it, so I called customer service. They were very kind and extremely helpful. I was transfered to a "specialist" (whatever that means). She explained that by Prop 65 Keurig they have to disclose that information to the public but the lead does not come in contact with any of the water or K cups. The lead is actually in the interior screws and from soldering the interior parts. It was explained to me that you do not come in contact with the lead at all. Even when carrying it. All the lead is evidently in the interior. So my conclusion is that I'm going to purchase it!

Examine design & Fix
by: Anonymous

I absolutely love this coffee brewer WHEN IT WORKS! I am getting my 3rd replacement this year. Between not brewing a full cup, turning off before it is time, not heating the water, not brewing at all even if it does heat the water, it is beginning to appear that it is not worth the problems. Although I have not had any problems with customer service and they are very apologetic for the inconvenience, that does not make the grade with me. I bought 3 brewers, 2 as gifts, and it is now becoming an embarrassment to me that I gave an expensive gift that does not work. I had planned a 4th purchase but have changed my mind. I think Keurig needs to examine it's technical design department and sale this product WHEN IT WORKS!

going on my 4th brewer
by: Anonymous

My first brewer was a gift and quit working after about 10 months. I purchased a replacement which worked for about 10 months. Called customer service who prompted me through a series of measuring cup size filling, poking the needle with a paper clip, and a lesson on how to descale. Regarding the whole paper clip cleaning method--REALLY??SERIOUSLY? A 140$ coffee pot that you have to poke with a paper clip?? Well, that worked for a day and the next morning had to call again. They replaced that machine for free. That replacement lasted for 6 months and started to smell like electrical burning. Called customer service, was put through the cleaning, poking process and was told to descale again after I just did it 1 week ago. I questioned the wisdom of descaling the maching with an electrical smell and they said it was o.k. So I did it and thankfully it did not burn the house down, but it did shut down completely and would not turn back on. They are replacing the machine for free again, but I'm not confident in this product and will look for another one. Thinking of returning to the old fashioned Mr. Coffee machine for 20 bucks. I only purchased one of those every 20 years, and that was only because I wanted a nicer looking one!!!

Burned wire smell?
by: RenShep TX

I just received my second Keuring. (The first kept turning off by itself, then finally would not turn on at all). I plugged the new one in and within five minutes noticed a smell of burning electrical wires. Anybody else notice this? I brewed a cup of coffee and am not sure if it affected the flavor, or if the burning smell just affected my taste buds.

I'm on Number 4
by: Anonymous

I love the whole single cup brewing concept. It's the best coffee i've ever had. Trouble is Keurig hasn't figured out how to make the brewer last more than a year. each time they replace one for me there is a reason. each time i modify my use of the machine to accomidate what they believe is the reason for failure .. and . . (wait for it) . . each time it fails again. now we are down to descaling once a month and using ONLY distilled water . not bottled or filtered water but distilled water! and there is no indication that my water is exceptionally hard . wow time to ask if it's really worth it. All i can say is that someone better figure out how to make this work or the whole K-Cup empire will come crashing down! as soon as i have one fail in less than a year and they refuse to supply me with a replacement for free i will definately bail. . . why would i spend money on a new machine only to have it fail again???? You guys at Keurig listening????

I can't live without it
by: Anonymous

The first Keurig I bought for half off worked for just under a year. Keurig replaced it for free. My son is still using the brewer for over 3 years with no problem. I have had the Platinum for 2 years with no problem. I use reverse osmosis water which probably helps. Occasionally I do clear clogs with a paper clip. If for some reason it dies I will buy another one before the end of the day!

Suddenly stopped working!
by: Anonymous

I've had my Keurig since Xmas and I really like it. This morning after making 2 cups it just stopped working - no power/won't turn on! I called customer service and they're going to replace it and give me 2 free boxes of coffee. I inquired if this was a common problem and was assured that it wasn't. However, I have my doubts lol!

I loved my Kuerig until it burned the entire first level of my house. The investigator pinpointed the coffee pot. I would definitely keep it unplugged. Apparently a failure in the heating element.

lead warning / customer service
by: MariusP

I also e-mailed customer service and got the "you'll receive a response within two days." That was a week ago, and no response.

I am not convinced by the posts stating that the lead is in a wire that never comes into contact with the water. If that's so, why wouldn't they put a note to that effect after the warning about? You would think they would want to assure customers who've just read that this machine contains materials causing cancer.

ALSO - the warning says, "CONTAINS CHEMICALS, INCLUDING LEAD..." Presumably that means there are other dangerous substances in the machine.

I AM HESITANT TO USE IT.

Love it!
by: Anonymous

I love my Keurig coffee maker. We had a few problems when we first got it...wouldn't brew the correct size, sometimes would not brew a cup..we would shut it off and turn it back on...wait a few minutes....we thought it was because we were pressing the button too quickly after turning it on. Since we wait a bit now before pressing the button to brew, it works great. These problems were only at the beginning of our relationship. We've had the coffee maker for 3 months now with no further difficulty.

on our 3rd B70 in one month
by: Anonymous

We knew somebody with the platnuim series B70 and loved the whole concept. Bought one for our selves for Xmas, after the 2nd day the unit would just shut off for no reason. We would have to remove water canister and put back on, also had to shut whole unit off and back on and would then luck out with a cup of coffee. Same thing would happen for the next cup. Called customer service and with no questions asked they sent us a new brewer ( which told me it was a on going problem). When we set up the new machine to our disblief the same thing happened! We called them again and they sent out a new brewer again!!We have now been using this brewer for a week and so far so good but still not exectly left with a good feeling about the product, just the concept! If it happens again we will go for a refund!!

Don't buy one
by: Jan

I'm on my third coffee maker. Same problem each time. Reads not ready and then shuts off. Never goes to brew. I so that you can unplug it take water tank off, plug back in put water tank back one and it will work."Yes". it did for one cup of coffee then you have to repeat the whole thing again. Forget it My coffee maker is going back for a refund. You will never get anyone to answer in the service department so don't try. Also they never call back. I have waited two week with out an answer. Now it's been pointed out about the lead issue not happy with that.

Keurig lead warning
by: Anonymous

I also called the company with this concern. I was told it was a brass piece(like a screw)that contained small amounts of lead. She didn't know where this piece was located but she knew it did not come in contact with the water or k-cups.
The warning states contains chemicals, including lead. Its made in china. Whats safe? Are all these coffee makers made like this. Do they all have these lead pieces?

Customer Service always has the same answer, I did not descale it, the water made it clog, I didn't read the instructions.
by: Anonymous

Yes, the comments below indicate that the machine (I have a B77 bought at COSTCO) does clog, stops brewing, and gives partial cups. Customer service staff are friendly, but hestitant to replace the machine. I asked if there was a local "repair" shop to go to since there are many shops representing other company's products. Kuerig, of course, has so few problems (they said) that there is no need to have a network of shops to fix their products. I just received my second brewer and we'll see what happens. It stopped brewing when a K-Cup exploded in the machine, and since then it does not work continuously. In fact, it is still spewing out small bits of coffee grounds despite the fact that Keurig Cust. Service says that's impossible. So, now I guess I need to get my eyes checked to make sure I did not "imagine" the coffee grounds.

THIS MACHINE SUCKS
by: Anonymous

I have had over 5 brewers and they all have had issues with loud noise or they just stop brewing. Each time customer service would tell me that it is the water where I live but funny people in the same complex who have one never have the problem. So I finaly upgraded to the deluxe modle and have had this less than a year I use bottled water and today it just stopped brewing after already doing two cups. What is up, I am going to use the back up machine I have and go thru what kcups I have left and seek another brewer and not KEURIG, it is too many times for something to go wrong and customer service to act like it is your fault and then sorry your warrenty is up. I am done with KEURIG and K-cups...

keurig this is my 2nd coffee maker
by: Anonymous

we purchased the keurig after reading all the great comments. I was incredibly pleased with the ease of use and excited to finally have a fresh cup of coffee on demand.

However we purchased it in December and already had to replace it. I went thru all the maintenance steps to only have to replace the machine. Keurig sent me another replacement which after 3 months went sour with problems. Yes i descaled it apropriately. still has problems.

Sometimes the unit shuts itself off completely. Clogging easily in the pump. Now I am waiting for my third machine to be delivered. All i know is at customer service they assure me this is not a common problem however that is not true to what I am reading.

Lead Keurig
by: Amber

I called the company after seeing the lead warning. Apparently, there is a copper coil inside the machine with a small amount of lead inside the coil. Keurig, it seems, gets this phone call all the time. The lead never comes into contact with the drinking water or the k-cup, as it is removed from that part of the machine. I felt somewhat comforted by their answer. Hope this helps!

by: Anonymous

Not only are we questioning in our minds, I sent a note by e-mail to the company. They indicated that I would receive a response in two days. That has been two weeks and stll no answer. I sent the same note again and still not answer. I think there is a problem and we should not use these coffeemakers.
