My Personal Advise on Keurig Coffee Makers

by Kate
(Old Saybrook, CT)

Since when did we decide making coffee was so hard? The Keurig looks and SOUNDS like a shoddy piece of machinery and the coffee that comes out isn't even good! Its so watery I cant even taste it.

Personally I wouldn't have even bought one of these but my dad insisted and all my suspicions were confirmed. This morning it took me almost fifteen minutes to make a cup of coffee (after poking and prodding at the thing to get it working) and the coffee tastes like crap.

My advice is to keep your old coffee maker (unless you either don't care what your coffee tastes like.)

**You have to run distilled water & descale**
by: Tawny

You have to run distilled or filtered water in these like you should with any coffee maker to keep build up of minerals out of the machine which will slow the flow of water. Also, you need to have a thin needle to clean out the needle part of the Keurig every so often. It's tiny and coffee has grounds even the K Cups.

Also if you run white apple cider vinegar in it once a month like you should again with any small appliance and then run a plain cup of water after running the vinegar (yes the whole water container of vinegar)... it will run like new again. These are just preventative maintenance which are described in the book if people read them lol..

Expensive Toy
by: Marguerite

The Keurig is not worth the time and effort required to brew a cup of coffee. I bought the filter attachment so that I could use my own coffee and it produced a weak watery cup of coffee. Awful. Also it doesn't even give one cup of coffee, only 7.25 ounces. Who thought of this brilliant idea? I have to clean out the filter and dry it before each brewing which is a nuisance. I would rather use my regular Mr. Coffee and throw out the unused portion than finagle with this contraption. Keurig is just an expensive gimmick. Oh yeah, and the K-cups are over priced. I would just as well get a 16 oz. cup of java at the local Mickey D's. Save your money!

Why throw away a pot of coffee?
by: Anonymous

I read all of these reviews and the best comment that is made in favor of the Keurig is that you no longer have to make a full pot and throw away the left-overs. Take a look at your Mr. Coffee, Braun, Krups or whatever .. see those little lines that say 2,4,6,8,10??? those indicate the amount of coffee cups you will brew if you fill the pot with water to that line. You can make as much or as little as you want. Now measure your coffee in proportion to the water and line the filter basket with a filter, add your coffee and push the "brew" button. All of this should take less than 2 minutes. You don't have to make individual cups over and over for each person - you can leave the pot and come back 10 minutes later and its even better. If you should happen not to drink all of it, put it in the fridge and have iced coffee in the afternoon.
My question with Keurig is how does the K-cup compensate for the fact that you may choose a short cup or tall cup? There is the same amount of coffee in each K-cup. You are either getting a very strong short or a very weak tall. Is it not wasting coffee to use too much coffee to brew a short cup?

light is working
by: Deb

Mine was an easy fix. Poured the water out and let it dry. This am it worked perfectly. I think I was overfilling it with the water. Probably why it also leaked a little sometimes. Happy to have it working because I really do love my keurig.

blue light won't come on
by: Deb

I purchased the B30 model last year. Really loved it but we are constantly having problems with the blue light coming on. We have also experienced the leaking and sometimes the half cup of coffee. Disappointed because I thought Keurig was a good brand to buy. I hope it is something that can be fixed.

Dont buy it!
by: Anonymous

Don't buy it! Its too much work for a half cup of coffee. It was a gift for my birthday. Had I bought it, I would have returned it back to the store by now! It take up too much counter space. I have to pull it to the edge of counter because the level hits the cabinet. Awkward!G

cuisinart one cup keurig coffee maker
by: Anonymous

Have had this coffee maker for just over a year. I loved it. It was only used in the morning and very seldom at night. Now it is leaking from the bottom. Has anyone else had this problem. Im not a happy camper right now, as over $200 is a lot to pay for a coffee machine.

4 tries 1 cup of coffee!
by: Anonymous

So glad I kept my old Mr. Coffee in the garage. As cute and great looking and a conversation piece as my Keurig is, it's not been worth the hard work just for 1 cup of coffee. I was so excited when I got it for Christmas, that I convinced my sister-in-law to get one too. Sad to say her it was bad advice. By June my started spitting out half a cup. I tried the vinegar thing too, but that only lasted a month or so. Good thing I registered it and have a warrenty. I won't buy another one, and wouldn't take one as a gift. Sorry honey!

Keurig Coffee Makers Continue with Pump Failures
by: Anonymous

Keurig Coffe makers (B70) continue to have pump stall problems. Worst QA control of any electronic device. They need competition.

sorry, Keurig, NOT good enough
by: theKat

Granted, I spent 18 yrs in Fla. learning to LOVE cafe Cubano aka coffe strong enough to stand the spoon in & now, after owning this (expensive) hunk of plastic 8 months, I just purchased another $10 coffeemaker that let's ME control the amount of very bold coffee I use. Hooray! I'm now enjoying a really good HOT cup of bold coffee that didn't cost me a 2nd mortgage, delivers coffee just as quickly & I can brew 3.5 cups which FILLS my 16 oz to-go mug. A very expensive piece of plastic, indeed! And it doesn't deliver. I dislike it so much I gave it away.

Owned four keurigs
by: Linda

I love the coffee keurig makes. I have one because I love that first, fresh brewed coffee in the morning. I also live by myself and don't need a full pot. I can't stand coffee that has been sitting in a pot.
I have had four Keurig brewers and each one does the same thing. They stop brewing and seem to clog after about a year or less. I spent more money last time and bought the cuisinart and it has done the same. It has a three year warranty and I'm sending it in to be repaired. I still like the keurig so I am going to buy a backup while the cuisinart is being repaired.
I recommend only buying the keurig if you like that one fresh brewed cup, but not if you are brewing for a number of people. It's gonna die on you after about a year and you will probably have to replace it. You will pay more for coffee than a regular coffee maker. I still like the convenience and taste.
Keurig does need to figure out how to make these things last longer.

KUERIG- Chinese for JUNK!
by: Anonymous

My Kuerig worked fine for about four months and then it started going bad. First it would not fill the cup, then it had to be cleaned with vinegar about every two weeks, next it would leak and overfill the cup, FINALLY, it just died, no power to anything, even the clock, nothing! I feel totally gyped by Kurig.
I went back to my old Mr Coffee pot and it still works fine after 10 years and it only cost about $12 back then not, $150 like the useless KUERIG!

Mini Keurig- BEST BUY EVER
by: Anonymous

I'm a southern grown college student who loves coffee and we are not allowed to have normal coffee makers in the dorms. At the time I bought the Keurig I was very skeptical since the name was not very known and no one was using them yet. Well, I have to say it was the best decision I've made. Every morning I can can my coffee, not have to pay the coffee shop at the school, and I love the brews! It has been a year and it has not failed me yet, and I would buy and recommend Keurig.

Just to let you know, we have a new B60 and have the plastic taste. I plan on returning it for a refund...have tried to correct the problem but nothing seems to work. It is not the water or the coffee so it must be the machine...

Half Cups
by: Anonymous

Same problem as everyone else. After some initial good runs the machine starts making half cups. I seem to have the problem more with the dark coffees than the med to light. Example Emerils Big Easy Intense. I am on my 2nd Mini Plus Brewer in 6 months and plan to go back to the old fashion way of making coffee since I have no faith in my machine or the company anymore. Don't waste your money on this crap!

Only a dribble and a half a cup?
by: Anonymous

Try the "love tap". Sounds ridiculous, but we tried everything else. I have had my Kuerig for 3 months and it started brewing only a half a cup. We cleaned the needle and usef vinegar. That didn't work. Then heard if you tap the top (gently) during a brew cycle it may just unclog the small tube. It worked!

No suggestion only trial and error.....
by: Anonymous

Its not really a suggestion but I can tell you what we did.
We tried cleaning the needles...didn't work
We then Tried CLR 50/50 dilution 3 reservoirs full....then it wouldnt brew at all (see my "wedding present" comment below). Then we kinda gave up and only brewed a half a cup twice. We had decided to just go back to a regular coffee pot until a christmas miracle happened....it started brewing a full cup again. Yes thats right out of the blue after about 3 or 4 days of struggling with it, it started working just fine. It must have heard our threat to get rid of it and started working....I have zero explaination. I say give the CLR a try, curse at it, threaten to throw it, then after 5 days if its still not working toss it off a tall building! Good Luck!

Sorry I bought a Kurig
by: Anonymous

My coffee maker is only four months old and only makes a 1/2 cup of coffee on any setting. I cleaned out the needles and that did not work. It is dumping the water back into the resevoir when making the coffee, I have only used filtered water. Does anyone have any suggestions??

After 3 months use...
by: Keurig user

I'm starting to experience problems with it. I've 'descaled' it but i'm having problems with it brewing coffee...nothing comes out. Usually that happens after 24 hrs. of non use. Then I try a brew cycle...nothing came out...I tried another cycle then i'd get too much coming out. At times, only half a cup would brew (and YES, I have the RIGHT settings). This morning was the 1st time nothing came out until after 2 brew cycles. I'm ready to pull out my old RELIABLE Mr. Coffee coffeemaker. Needless to say I WON'T be buying another Keurig.

tastes like plastic
by: JB

Our new keurig coffee maker was used for the first time this morning. Does anyone else have a problem with a plastic taste? I did rinse out the dispenser prior to using it. Perhaps the plastic taste will disappear after several uses? Advise or comments regarding this plastic taste would be appreciated. Thanks!

Wedding present
by: Jackie

We rec'd our Keurig B60 in November 2010 and it is now April 2010. Currently it only brews a half a cup SO I followed the recommended maintenance procedure which included the cleening of the needle and descaling with vinegar and STILL brews a half a cup IF it brews anything at all!!! Currently to get it to brew anything I need to shut it off, turn it back on, flip the lid open, press it down, press the "large" cup button....then repeat these step MANY times with a possible half a cup end result....Will we get another Keurig? Answer: HIGHLY UNLIKLY!!!!!

Hey Jeff

Try reading the other 300 comments on this site. Between my girlfriend and I we have had 5 differant machines and they all have failed. Keurig obviously has a serious problem with the design on these machines.

Keurig?
by: John

at one time i was able to see all 18 pages of what people thought of their Kurig machines, now I can not--Has Kurig been able to get in and sabatoge this thing?
I have had three Kurig machines and so it was very enlightining to read all of the comments. I now have a model B31 in red, very pretty, but it should NOT be used as a coffee maker. Why? because it would make a preacher swear! I have poked the holes and used the vinegar and tipped it upside down and shooook it and even gave it it's own name, but to no avail. I still get half cups and sometimes NO cups and then cups with residue in them. I am looking for those two hose lines that "AVIATOR" talks about, but can not find them. I guess its going to be "DEATH TO THE KURIG!" But what to do with the six boxes of coffee?
