Keurig coffeemakers "Not a reliable machine"

by Mary Ann
(Massachusetts)

I have had two Keurig coffeemakers. The first one I had malfunctioned after 8 months of use and was replaced by Keurig.

The replacement has now stopped working properly after less than a year's use. It continually shows the "descale" prompt and despite going through the descaling procedure at least 5 times, the machine does not work properly.

It will attempt to brew then stop after a few drops of water have come out. I then have to shut it off and then back on to try to get water to filter through. Bottom line: This very expensive coffee machine is not reliable at all!!!

#3 Keurig
by: Deb W.

I am now on Kuerig coffee pot #3. The first one and second one have now be replaced. Basically the same problem....short cups, hot water going back into the reservoir. I've followed every suggestion for descaling, cleaning, etc. You name it, I did it. Let's see how long this one lasts before I call them again. I find it odd that they replace so many of these coffee pots. Have they solved any of the problems or do they just replace them since it's easier? In my opinion this cannot be cost effective for Kuerig.

Turned on by itself and over heated.
by: Christie Weber

I owned my machine for about 9 months love it and use it daily without a problem-UNTIL- One day last week I was at my computer and heard something dripping. It was my machine had turned on and started brewing, by itself. I tried turning it off but it wouldn't so I unplugged it. When I plugged it in again all lights went on and it started brewing on its own again. It seemed the heating element kept getting hotter and hotter until it appeared to be smoking. I unplugged it and called the company. They are sending a new one and recommended NOT TO PLUG IT IN AGAIN, keep the k-cup to send back and throw the machine out.
I love my machine so much that bought two of them for both my parents this christmas, but I will from now on unplug it when I am not home. I cant imagine what would have happened if I hadn't been home the first time. She assured me that this is a new model and it wont happen again, and Im hopeful she is right.

Keurig One Cup Coffee Maker
by: Angie

I am on my third machine which has now stopped working. First machine I had for over 1 year stopped brewing coffee (after descaling; cleaning etc) and it was replaced. The 2nd replacement stopped working (same problem as first); this coffee maker was replaced with a 3rd coffee maker which has now stopped working after only 8 months (same problem, same solution with no results) machine still does not work and I have to stay on the phone with customer service for more than 1 hour going through garbage as before. The need to make a more reliable coffee maker that will last for the price they sell them.

Unreliable machines indeed
by: CSnow

My first Keuring was a birthday present. I loved the convenience and thought it brewed a good cup of coffee...about 13 months later, the on/off switch started malfunctioning. So I replaced it with a new machine. About eight months later, when I attempt to power it on, the machine sounds like it is loading water and preparing to heat it, and then it just shuts off.

I doubt I'm going to buy another one. Regardless of warranty/replacement, this is just too big a hassle to have to keep going through.

here we go again..
by: Anonymous

i bought my husband the platinum edition of the keurig for christmas 2009. exactly 9 months later it stopped working. i called customer service and after they walked be through several tests, they agreed to send me a new machine free of charge. all i had to do was mail the kcup holder to them. seemed like a good deal. we've been using the replacement machine for 8 months and guess what....it is doing the same thing as the 1st machine. guess it's time to call customer service again, spend an hour letting them walk me through things i've already tried and then they'll send me a replacement. i'm glad they warranty the brewers and replace for free BUT what a pain to keep returning them and having to go for weeks w/out our morning wake up coffee!

On my 4th Keurig
by: Anonymous

I have a love/hate relationship with my B70 Keurig. I think it stinks that the company doesn't let you know (on the box) that you should use distilled water. I love the brewed coffee it produces when it works. Keurig has been great about replacing my brewer at no charge to me. I just don't know how they can keep doing that for me or their other customers. It also seems strange when all you hear about is "go green" and there is know way of repairing these units. Just throw them away!!
Not very good for the company or our enviroment.

Keurig is a BUST!
by: Walt

OK; short cups of coffee; CHECK! Have tried all the cleaning tricks (vinegar, paper clips, etc.) I had finally gotten used to the fact that I had to run two brew cycles for a 8 oz. cup. My new dilemma, which I haven't solved, is the Power. I unplug, plug in, turn on and hear something for a minute and then it shuts off. The light is still on under the water reservoir, but the light on the top of the machine stays off and it shows Not Ready. Can't brew a thing!I bought this from Target a year ago, but I don't keep receipts (as I should). Short cups started happening after two months and has Never been fixed. Persoally, will never buy this, or any variation again. Simply not worth it.

Can someone help me?
by: Kevin

I have lost the gizmo that fits into the K cup holder. If any one has an old machine not working I would be greatful if they would call me and allow me to buy it from them.

Just make it last!!!
by: anonymous

This will be my third machine! Just got off the phone with customer service, did all the troubleshooting, and the problem just got worse. Descaled it twice, the light still won't go off. Machine is not sucking water after dispensing... also water is draining into the reservoir as well as dispensing a short cup!!
I do love the convenience of this machine, seems sturdy and esthetically pleasing. I appreciate the fact that Keurig is replacing it for free "again", but think they should just make it better....
Also, I haven't had any issues with customer service.. always patient and polite.

Happy Owner
by: Anonymous

I must have have more luck than anyone else here. I've had my Keurig B40 for a couple of years and we usually fill our own coffee. We paid approximately $100 at Target. I've had problems with half cups but after soaking the coffee holder screen in 1 pint of hot, hot water with 1 TBLSP of powdered dishwashing detergent and scrubbing with a small brush it takes care of that problem. Only just recently does that descaling light keep coming on but on my model it will still dispense the water. We descaled 3x and now are calling the company. I am a happy owner but hope that they will have a solution for that dumb descaling light.

Try This
by: dansb

I too have been through a couple of machines and just got off the phone with the technical dept. We trouble shooted my problem machine and it worked! Even thought you may have already gone thru the following steps... try this again and comment if it worked.
Take k cup holder out and seperate into two pieces. it twists appart. take a paper clip or tooth pick and go around the small circle opening in the bottom part seven or eight times. put back together. Open the top and run your clip or toothpick in the three holes around the piercing needle. One is easy to find the other two are kind of hidden and only go down about a quarter inch. around 7-8 times in each hole. Now remove water take and firmly reseat holding down on the tank in place foe about 15 seconds. Now try to run three 8oz tests with just water. I was told that some of the k cups are over preeerized and when the top needle pierces the top of the k cup the extra pressure throws coffee up into the needle assemply. Instead place a kcup in the holder and push down to firmly seat it into the holder, them close the top. The extra pressure is release through the bottom. let me know if this helps.

4th Replacement
by: Anonymous

I'm on my 4th replacement unit (all being sent free from Keurig). Yes, good customer service but it SUCKS that they cannot correct the problem. Goes to show, they are making their $$$ on the K-cups if they can ship this many brewers out for free. What a waste of time, energy, money....and not to mention the damage/waste these disposed of units are doing to the environment!!!

KEURIG JUNK

On my 6th b60- all under warranty - among the worst products made. Poor design and Keurig knows little re QA.

My second machine has died in less than 6 months
by: Anonymous

My first machine died within 6 months. I only brew a couple cups a day...problems started with short cups. I did the cleaning, de-scaling recommended by rep which didn't help. They sent me a new machine in Sep 10...now that has died (early Feb 11). Also started with short cups, while descaling, machine completely stopped, display changed, made a hissing sound. I haven't called the factory yet but will probably have to go through the same protocol as last time. What a frustration especially considering what the machine costs. I would prefer my money back vs another machine.

you don't get what you pay for
by: jamie

by: Anonymous

All the above
by: Anonymous

I wish I'd have done my homework before spending all this money for a problem child. It has off an on short cupped, if you use their expensive little gizmo fill it with your own coffee it overflows often and runs all over the counter. Then today I get up walk to the coffee maker punch the on button and nothing the power light does not come on. I bought this at Walmart and of course you know where it came from thats right THE CHINA company almost laughable. But since all the USA corporations want more profit more profit for their stock holders we consumers get thrown under the bus. I wish I could buy products made in the US but we all know thats no longer possible sad very sad. Well if you bought one of these lemons good luck.

I have you all beat...
by: Karen from Arlington, VA

I am on my 4th replacement unit! I have gone through 5 units in the last 2 years. I descale (remember to let it sit for 4 hours), use the additional water filter, clean the needles, seat the tank properly.... and still the damn thing acts up. I only make 1-2 cups of coffee a day, there is no reason why the machine should have a life expectancy of 3-6 months. I am on the internet looking for another single serve brewer with better reliability. It is that or return to the days of waiting in line at the starbucks....

Not happy with keurig
by: Jodie

I have the exact same problems and am extremely dissapointed. First it was the wrong fill for the setting I have and now it just won't brew. I refuse to replace it again, unless it is for FREE from the manufacturer!

Not reliable
by: Deb

i received my first (yes....my first) Keurig for Christmas 2009. After trying to program it over and over with many issues like shutting off on it's own, brewing 1/2 cup and many calls to their customer service they sent a new one. Well now, it's been 1 year since I have the new one and here we go again. Sometimes it doesn't brew the full cup, if the water canister isn't seated properly it makes a grinding noise and doesn't pull the water in to begin brewing. At times the water goes back into the water canister thru the little spout at the top. I have also had it brew and drip water back into the water canister simultaneously. Only once did the coffee overflow the cup (even though I had the right size cup for the cup setting.

Question Reliability
by: Anonymous

I have owned a Kerig for approx 16 months. The fist one owned did exactly what many owners have experienced, will not brew, short fills. I cleaned the needles, descaled, cleaned the intake filter without resolution. Keuring replaced it. I'm on my second one, (replacement), and I am experencing the exact same issues as the first. I doesn't take much to figure out they have some engineering issues. I noticed that Keurig officially state a thirty day warranty. All this said, I really like the machine but I can't keep trying to fix these same issues.... these machines are not cheap.

Keurig B70 stopped working
by: Jennifer

The exact same thing happened to me. After a year and a half's worth of use, it stopped pumping water. This unit cost me $169 and I won't be replacing it. I've read the on-line reviews and this is a very COMMON problem. It the unit was $50 then I'd probably replace it but c'mon..... $170 every other year? No way. I'm disappointed in the reliability of the Keurig. I'm moving on to something different just as soon as I do more online research. (posted January 2011)
