Keurig Brewer - Brewing Half sized cups!

I have had my coffee maker for 1 week and now it won't brew proper cup sizes. I have no idea what would cause this but customer service told me to de scale the product. Why should that have to be done to a machine that has had no water pass through it up until about a week ago.

This product is innovative amazing and convenient but as for the problems and the unsupportive technical support Keurig has a long journey ahead of them to achieve a high customer satisfaction.

Corrosion on the solenoid is not the cause of hte problem as the problem can occur with brand new machines. Although, like spanking, replacing parts will jostle the machine enough to unstick the valves.

The problem is with a faulty solenoid which is directly above the pump that forces the coffee out of the boiler and into the K-cup. With the corrosion build up, the pump will eventually fail.
This is a drastic measure, but with the machines piling up, I was able to permanently fix my machine, by removing the solenoid and pump and replacing them. It's not easy, but I was up to the challenge.

Thanks to all here, I managed to get my Keurig to work after the half full cup issues - spanking each time I cleaned. Only the spanking worked.

This time - nothing, nada, zero. I've spanked, unplugged, poked and practically broke my hand over 4 separate days.

When I complain publicly like this, well, it's a sign I am really frustrated. If not for the fact that I bought at Costco and can probably return (way behind warranty, by the way) I'd drop it off the balcony of my condo then drop kick it to the garbage.

It is garbage!

Sorry, No. There is no way to fix. It's a design problem with sticky valves. This is why all the different workarounds work but only temporarily.

You could change the design using different parts and maybe different circuits of water flow, but short of that, if it's Keurig, you just have to live with it.

I pickeed up a Keurig recently and it's great, but it's now making the half cup servings. I'm using he work around (run the same K-cup twice) but I'd really like to fix it.

I've tried spanking it.
I've tried descaling it.
I've tried cleaning the needles.
I've tried burbing it.
I've tried repriming it.
I've tried holding a finger over the return.

Though I don't LIKE using the work-around, I will continue to do so, until someone comes up with a permanent fix. Is there a way to clean/adjust/lube the internal valves?

It rarely is due to mineral build up. It happens to new machines, to machines that only use mineral free water. Mineral build up can cause the prob but you'd have to have a lot of mineral build up.

The prob is due to sticky valves. This is why so many diff cures seem to work. Even whacking the machine can work, depending on which valve is stuck. This is also why each of the cures sometimes doesn't work. Demineralize all you want, you'll still occasionally have to invert the machine or whack it on the top or bottom.

I've received a few Keurig from people that said it's broken, not making a full cup, etc. I love them because I get a free Keurig. It's hard water, mineral buildup inside. Valves get stuck as it ages and buildup. Smacking it on the bottom/side/top just knocks the valves, clearing it. Running the descaler option with vineger helps clear out the buildup. I use CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust) diluted and rinse it quite a few times. That's basically it.

Machine had an air lock ...take reservoire off , put machine over sink , turn upside down A few times and presto , fixed ...thanx to all comments , this one was only one that worked for me ...

Not honoroing waranty? I don't see how that's legal. I can believe they are overwhelmed with returns, but that's the cost of business when you sell a bad design, keep selling it, keep insisting it's just scale build-up, keep refusing to continue selling the product. They should have had full recall with a fix or refund to all customers.

Keurig is not worth the money they cost. I bought the b70 series and for as much as it cost and as hi-tone as it is, it's not worth it. I had mine for about 7 months and I only use bottled water in it and put a filter in with that, and it still didn't work right. Please if your thinking about buying one and paying all that money for one, do yourself a favor don't do it. Save allot of aggravation and money and buy another brand. Keurig is not what they seem to be. Another thing, I called in on my warranty. They said they no longer take them back because they get too many returns on them. So it took me over an hour on the phone with them fighting them to honor their warranty.

Well after reading the thread, and comtemplating on what to do, I decided to give it a shot. I removed the resevoir and low and behold there was some go on the intake filter...removed it and still not a full cup so....I unplugged it, removed the resevoir and drip tray, turned it upside down and gave it a good thumping and...voila...A full 10 ounce cup after going through descaling hell and every other fix it. If in doubt...give it a good thumping, it really works.

So my LESS than one year old Keurig machine started brewing half cups then crapped out on us. Called Keurig and because it was under the one year warranty they sent out a brand new one. The key to this is UNDER THE ONE YEAR WARRANTY.

 It's not the water--it's the bad design

Keurig likes to tell people they need to descale because that means its a user problem and not a design problem. but using distilled water waon't prevent the problem. If it did, a lot of us would be happier--not thrilled but happier. You need to read thru all the cooments to understand the prob. Keurig has changed the pumps in their design at last 3 times in the last two years but the problem isn't the pumps; it's the valvrs.

I've always used bottled water with my Keurig and when I ran out one day I got lazy and used tap water for about 4 days. It started brewing 1/2 cups and really slowly after this so I'm assuming build up was the cause. We do have very soft water but I descaled twice and it's working fine. Looks like we're not going to chance it with tap water. I love Keury too much :)

Yws all kinds of things seem to be "the Fix" because all kinds of things might unstick the valves, depending on how stuck they are -- turning on/off, turn upside down, bottom swatting.

They alwsays say to descale--it's in thew script so thy don't have to say it's a design failure that has been reported so so many times. Always tell them you've descaled three times to no avail and get a new one under warrenty. If no warranty, toss it and get another brand. the problem with sticky valves is recurrent, chronic and eventually drive you to quit using the darn thing.

Beating up my keurig was not necessary, all I have to do is unplug the machine, remove the reservoir and turn it upside down and let all water comes out of the overflow line. Plug the machine,power on, press full cup button and yesss full cup of coffee. Thanks to all.

There are several things causing the problem. My brewer stopped working after a month or so. I did the following:

1. Turned it over and burped it. Worked fine until the next morning.
2. Held my finger over the white overflow tube and forced the air out. Worked fine until the next morning.
3. Removed the water reservoir. There is an x shaped plastic valve that should be floating on the base of the brewer where the water comes in. Mine was wedged. Used a needle nose pliers and left it so it floats again. Did the trick.
4. Do lot remove the water tank for refill. Add water to the tank.

Had a Keurig for 5 years with no incident; replaced it upon failure. Had this one about a year and started in recently with the short cups. We've tried all the remedies listed below, and nothing really works. I start the day by brewing without a pod into a 2 cup glass measuring cup (because I always have these problems first thing everyday and don't know how much will come out - sometimes my machine doesn't brew at all, and when you push the button again, you get a double cup!) After that it is usually fine. If it does give me half a cup, I just brew using the same pod again on teacup size and that gives me a full cup. Shame to have to jump through hoops to get a cup of coffee, but I'm not willing to go back to pot coffee makers, so we make do.

You probably could have removed the screws, done nothing to the parts and then reassembled and it would have worked. Even new ones exhibit the behavior , so it's not generally a clogging issue.

I removed the 5 screws holding the bottom plate on. Then remove the 2 screws that hold the small piece where the resevoir fits in. This is the piece that is semi tranparent and round shaped. Pull the small black screen/filter piece out and clean thoroughly. Replace screen/filter back in semi transparent piece maling sure to index the screen/filter properly. Reassemble and things should be back to working properly. This coffee maker works on a timer circuit that allows the pump to cycle for a set amount of seconds for each different size of cup. If it cannot draw a sufficient amount of water through the screen/filter in the required time you will not get a full cup no matter what size you are requesting.

The whomp-the-bottom-of-the brewer is only a temporary fix. Expect the problem to recur often as it is due to an inherent design flaw. But at least it's a temporary fix, which is more than Keurig offers.

Who would'a thunk it?! Keurig B60 was suddenly brewing partial cups and we noticed water coming out of the overflow tube into the reservoir. I followed the manufacturers descaling procedure, no better. Discovered this thread and though I'm not one to try rash fixes or abuse equipment, I figured at this point it couldn't hurt. Removed the reservoir, turned the machine over and gave it 5 or 6 hard smacks on the bottom. (Hurt me more than the Keurig, litterally!) Put the reservoir back on and filled it with our (Britta pitcher) filtered water, and ergo - good as new! Immediately noticed no more water coming out of the overflow tube, the pump sounded like it was pumping a full amount of water again, and the large cup brew button filled a 16 oz. mug of test hot water completely! Must have been a stuck valve or a bit of "pre animate matter caught in the matrix." Whatever it was, thanks everyone who posted here. :-)

i am not familiar with the Cuisinart, and that one does not apply because this thread deals with Kurig brand brewers that are only brweing a half-cup. You sound like you have a power issue, which is best to take up with the manufactuer. Good luck.

Hello - any idea why I would have no power to my Cuisinart Keurig Coffee System - got up this morning and it seems dead. Not even a year old ???????????? Need my morning coffee - have moved it to another outlet where i know there is power - tried cleaning the pod area - the on/off makes no difference, nothing happens. Very odd !!!

I've had the same issues with my Keurig as well. And then my problem would progress to where I would "brew" and nothing would come out. I've never tried the spanking method, but someone posted on UTube about pulling the water resevoir and cleaning the water intake where there's a small hole and filter -with a sonic toothbrush. I did that and then scooped around with a toothpick and some gunk came out. I plugged in the machine, turned it on, and voila! I got a FULL cup of coffee. There are some definite design flaws with the machine, and I also think that if you have to clean the machine with vinegar as frequently as you do, it would be a good idea for the company to come up with a method where you could press an added button on the machine and "cold" flush the system, a water tank full at a time instead of making a bazillion cups of coffee and wearing on the machine.

There's my two cents! Keurig, call me when you use my idea. I'm sure every person that owns a Keurig would agree with me and buy a new unit just for that feature.

Had the same problem with this P.O.S.
I followed their websites recommendations, slapped the crap out of it, and nada.
I had it 14 months..i called them up,,explained what happened..they quized me on what I did to try and fix it.
A customer service rep called me back..and sent me a brand new replacement unit.
I agreed to send back the kcup holder in return, and i immediatley did after receiving the unit 5 days later

Have had machine for over a yr. Problem started w/in first month... almost returned it to Costco... still think about returning it to Costco with a printout about the half cup problem, a gallon of bottled water, cups and coffee and let Customer Service use the machine for a day. If everyone who bought one from Costco, returned their machine - Costco would drop the Keurig.

OK.. vent over. Here is my solution. I put my mug under machine and brew the largest size and get about half. Raise the handle and brew the same size again using the same K cup. I get most of a mug, smile, and declare myself happy to have most of a mug of coffee.

Someone should start a class action against Keurig.

After about a year, my Breville started pulling water VERY slowly. Then it started making partial cups. I de-scaled it and poked both pins with a paper clip but the problem remained. I was about to toss it out. Then I took the water tank off and looked down the little hole where the water is pulled into the machine. It was clearly clogged with coffee grounds and slimey stuff. So I took the bottom off and found the tube that runs from the bottom of the tank to the pump. It is held with a clip on the pump side and two scres on the tank side. I took the screws and then removed the metal clip holding it to the pump. Popped it out and ran water through it both directions. Lots of stuff came out! Put it all back together and whalaa! Worked like a champ. Very relived. Hope this helps.

The spanking worked for me, but only for a week or so and then back to 1/2 cups. I repeated the treatment, but it only lasted 3 days. Repeated again and now we are at the every day necessary stage. Don't be fooled, this is a design flaw and the "fix" is temporary at best. Contact Keurig and request a new machine - thats the only "cure" and even then maybe not permanent.

Same.....it took more than 1 attempt at spanking it. Infact you need to thwap the hell out of it. 5 seems tobe the magic number. But be careful when you do. Mine pissed out hot vinegar throuh the vent and i got hit in the face. Thatswhen i hit it harder. Seems to work for now.

This problem of water coming from the overflow tub at the top or bubbling form the bottom of the resovoir are symptoms of the same problem. If you try ti make a cup and you see bubbling from the bottom of the resovoir, you can also notice that the resovoir water level rises; water gets pumped back into the tank. It's a valve problem. Whack the machine or turning it upsaide down or both can free the valves but it's often only temporary.

I started getting partial cups then the machine started not making any coffee. I would hear it heat the water but it would often times not push water through the k cup needle. I remember hearing a sound like a quit clicking noise, similar to a pump that was sucking up air. I checked the valve on the bottom of the reservoir to make sure it was not seized in the open or closed position. This didnt resolve the problem. I ended up having to unplug the device from power turn it back on and let it suck more water from the reservoir then It would pour a some hot water into the cup as it was sucking water from the reservoir, while simultaneously dripping hot water back into the reservoir from the rubber nostril at the top of the reservoir. I called support and they said discald and clean the needles/k cup holder. This kind of worked, but I still would have to unplug the machine over and over to get a full cup of coffee. I checked that the nostril linked to a closed system by plugging my finger over the nostril while the machine was sucking water from the keurig, and it was. I then decided to plug the nostril after it sucked water in and began heating water bubbles started coming up through the metal mesh at the bottom of the reservoir. I would alternate this with plugging the nostril for a second, while it was sucking water from the reservoir. I assumed this was bleeding the system. after 8 cycles of this, no more bubbles would rise from the bottom of the reservoir and I was getting perfect portions of coffee. I SUSPECT THAT THESE DEVICES NOT ONLY NEED TO HAVE THE NEEDLES CLEANED, DESCALDING THE INTERNAL COMPONENTS (REMOVE DEPOSITS FROM WATER), AND CLEANING OF THE RESERVOIR VALVE. YOU WILL ALSO NEED TO BLEED OUT ANY AIR FROM THE SYSTEM.

It works in many cases but it's not a permanent fix. Expect to need to repeat the invert and hit process more than once. Seems the longer the machine sits idle, the more likely it it to jam up, causing short cups.

My brewer was brewing half cups of coffee. In the past just doing a descaling fixed the problem but this time a descaling did not help at all. I did some research on the keurig site which showed rinsing out the water reservoir, especially at the water entry to the coffee maker point. It also showed cleaning out the water entry point on the coffee maker using a cloth. I did both but it did not work again. On close examination of the water entry point on the coffee maker using a flashlight, I notice debris that were white greyish colour just inside the entry port. I used a tooth pick or you could use tweezers to remove the residue which looked like fibres of some sort. Below the residue is a fine plastic mesh which is obviously some sort of filter. The coffee maker has never worked better, I get a full cup each time. I will certainly check this spot again.

I had a Platinum for a year without problems. Then short cups and drips. Returned it to Costco and not a new one. Within 2 weeks, same problem. Returned that. Went to BBB and got a Breville. Five days after having it, drips and short cups. Turned it upside down and smacked it and problem solved, for now. By the number of posts, there are manufacturing and/or design problems. Too many people, too many problems.

For anyone who had this issue and fixed it by the smacking method, did the problem ever come back?

Another victory for the spanking method! Mine was brewing short cups (4 oz) for so long that I eventually forgot how much the large one was suppose to brew. I tried the spanking (very hard upside down) and was disappointed to only get about 10 oz. I thought the large one should be 12 oz. I was about to post on here that it didn't work but decided to double check what it was suppose to be and yep 9.25 oz for the large cup so it did work!!!! Be sure to double check what you should be getting :)

Having ditched one year-old Keurig 2 months ago for exactly this problem without coming across this "fix". I figured what the hell and gave it a try on my 2 month old replacement Keurig that suddenly started brewing half-cups this morning.

VOILA!! Burping and spanking it as described in this blog worked immediately. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!

Just want to say spanking the Keurig brewer from the sides and bottom solved my problem. Make sure to hit it somewhat hard and be careful from water squirting back.

Thought I was going to have to live with running my Keurig thru two cycles to get a full cup. I even stopped using my filtered adapter because I thought that was the issue. Flipped it a few times, smacked it on the bottom a few times, and it's back to normal! Thank you!

I thought everyone on this thread was insane. I had tried everything on the Keurig site to fix the machine with no luck. It kept brewing a 1/4c each time. Turned it over, wacked it a few times on the sides and bottom and it is working perfectly now! Yes, this sounds crazy but if you want to fix your machine, try it out.

Found this "spank the Keurig" thread and decided we'd give it a try - we were getting espressso-shot amounts instead of full cups. We started by "boxing its ears" on the sides, then turned it over. As soon as we turned it over we heard some air burbling. We turned right-side up, and some water escaped. Turned it upside-down again, gave it some whacks for good measure and back right side up (and a bit more water trickled out).

I'm not convinced it was the "spanking" that did the trick - it may have just been turning it over - but maybe the "ear boxing" un-stuck whatever it was that was stuck before we turned it over. At any rate, percussive maintenance really did work - our first cup out was perfect measure.

Yes sir ree..paper clipped it,, sewing needle, smacked it, and believe me I am now a small guy buy, I even turned a screw into the rubber return spigot that is dumping the water back into the resevoir, and still its only brewing 1/2 as much.(TW, don't try the screw thing..the water bubbles up from the bottom of the resevior instead.).
Vinegar?..forget it..and we only used brita water in it.
These friggin things are so disposable they should have been made by BIC.

I ended up throwing on the kitchen floor, but told the wife I accidently dropped it when she came running in acusing me of getting frustrated.

The things aren't cheap and they force the retailer to price point it their way.

Went through and read everything. Was going to do the whole vinegar descale, but figured hitting the machine would make me feel better. Sure enough, true to this thread, turning the machine over and hitting the bottom a few times cleared problem up right away. I notice the water stream coming out is much stronger. No more 1/2 cups of coffee.

I found this thread and in pure desperation I gave the machine a good hit to the side and all of the junk came pouring right out. Like I said I can't believe it. It works like a brand new machine.

I am sooooo tired of Keurig! We have tried everything and I think we are done. We smacked every surface-right side up and upside down, cleaned every thing we could find, used the air compressor as a last resort but nothing worked.
On the largest size, IF we can get anything at all, we get about a 1/4 cup.
A very disappointing run with this machine. But with so many people buying them over and over again Keurig has no incentive to actually fix the problem. And of course it's always just after the warranty runs out.

Found this thread researching the short cup problem on the B60.

There probably is something to the "trapped air" theory. I ONLY get a short cup on my first cup after restarting the unit (I only use it 2-3 times per week). After that, I get exactly the measure I have selected.

I am guessing there is also probably something to the needle clogging from making hot cocoa if that is the case.

given the number of cups I make,I can live with having to run two small cups in a row on the first firing of the unit after being shut off. Kind of a first world problem really.

I started getting short cupped, finally it quit brewing all together and started spitting heated water back into my reservoir. My exit needle was clogged and Keurigs paper clip solution failed because it wouldn't pass all the way through the needle to remove the clog due to the fact that the paper clip doesn't bend. Here's my "tool", a twisty tie from a bread bag. Strip 3/4 of the plastic or paper off to expose the wire. I left the other 1/4 on so I had something to hold on to. Run it through your exit needle (the needle in the k-cup holder) it should bend and pass all the way through your needle completely and clear your clog.

I remember pounding on the side of our TV when I was a kid but I never heard of giving the coffee maker a good pounding. My brewer just started shorting the cups. I cleaned everything and descaled it. Nothing worked. Then I found this. Pounded it 3x. The kids thought I was destroying it. (I just hammered a hard drive to oblivion this morning) Works great now. Brewed every size option into a measuring cup and each one was exact. There is no more water draining back into the water resevoir.

Tried all the suggestions, it sometimes brews a full cup, but mostly not. Called them as it is only 9 months old. All I had to do was brew an 8 oz cup and tell them how much it brewed(2/3 cup). Sending me a new one under warranty. I asked if they are working on a fix for future brewers and she said yes. I guess if all I have to do is send them back the K-cup holder, I can do that once a year for a new machine....but if I ever have trouble after the warranty expires, no more Keurigs for me!

I just got off the line with Keurig and they are sending me a replacement. This is the third time I have had a problem with the special model not giving proper cups . The overflow pours half back into the res. They asked me what I did to troubleshoot and being the third time I knew their solutions pretty well , we tried all their suggestions and it still didnt fix it so they are sending out my fourth unit counting the original. I said I would be happy to put this unit in the box from the new one and send it back so they could check it out but they were adamant they didnt want it. Just the K cup holder they want back Like the last time. The first time they told me to cut the plug and throw the unit out. I guess they want to keep us buying their K cups at 60 cents or more a cup . Probably cost them 5 cents to make one. I have to say though they have always replaced the units , I guess because t hey are all still under warranty but still they do it so Kudos to them for that. Their reps have alway been nice so I cant really complain. Do like the coffees.

I've banged, hammered, pounded, and slammed. I've purged all the lines with an aircompressor. I pulled the check valve out which seemed too tight and cleaned it. Even propped it open interally. No matter what I do I get trickling and most of the water recycling back into the resevoir. I'm giving up at this point and just buying a cheapo unit rather than blowing another $250 on a Breville that's only lasted 18 months.

Less than a month old using filtered soft water and I could hear the pump running forever after a successful brew..Display said to prime..Followed the directions 3 times and same results. Powered down and up, same results..Turned it over, gave it 3 whacks, and back to brewing..I did not have the problem of undersized brews, just stopped pumping from the resevoire..

I had water coming out the relief spout and going back into the resivoir whenever it was only making half cups of water. tried spanking it and it appears to be working. Seems to be a better troubleshooting method than pounding fist on the top of it in frustration and splattering coffee all over the kitchen... Thanks.

No, the heating tank always fills when the machine is turned on or before a cycle begins. Short cups are a lack of water in the heating chamber--it's a lack of water going into the kcup--with the diffeerence being water going into the cld water resevoir via the air vent tube at the top or the fill valve at the bottom.

A lot of the apparent but unreliable cures are like cures for hiccups, or whacking a TV on the side to "fix" the picture -- some things coincide with the hiccups stopping or the TV reception improving, so you have a large number of purported cures that don't seem to work for a great many folks or with any consistency. Same with the Keurig; whack it; descale it; sing it lovely tunes; any of othese might seem to work once in a while. Whacking might even help a sticky valve to move. But it's the design that's at fault.

I started getting short-cupped yesterday. It continued this morning. I ran about 6 cups of vineger through there, and cleaned the outlet with a paper clip. Still kept getting short cups of vinegar.

I unplugged it again, turned it upside down, and gave it about 6 good whacks. Works like new again.

When I turned it right-side up again, I could hear air escaping the system.

Hitting, not hitting, paperclips. ..
If you measure, when your keurig short cups, the water level in the resevoir rises. Water that should be going into the Kcup is going back to the resevoir. Whacking might knock a sticky valve back to a closed position but the problem is the design. Cleaning the water inlet might seem to help (while you're futsying with the inlet, the valve eventually closes) but if water can't get pushed into the resvoir at the bottom, it will go in through the top "overflow" return tube. An internal valve that directs water to the kcup is not opening all the way -- that's what is the main cause of the short cups. Fix? Get rid of the keurig; they've been through 4 design changes and can't seem to conquer this problem.

How frustrating! Two machines later and months of brewing 1/2 cups twice (for a full cup) - with ZERO help from Keurig (other than paper clips and vinegar). Who do they think I am, MacGyver? A little pat a few times on the bottom - and voilà! Truth be told, you can hear the air escaping a little just by turning it upside down. I still hit it a few times to release some frustration. I've had my Keurig B70 for about 2 years with no problems. Around Christmas it started "short-cupping" and I was frantic! Tried cleaning the needles and descaling with no results.

Out of warranty and pretty much out of luck, I found this site. Removed reservoir, flipped machine over onto some dish towels in the sink (to avoid scratches) and smacked the bottom a few times. Two cups of hot apple cider later, I'm loving my Keurig again and very thankful to those who posted the "fix" here.

We had the same issue with ours this morning. We smacked the bottom, still only slow drips and 1/4 cups (not even half!). Called Keurig and they said it needed to be de-scaled. I got pissed because our coffee maker is a week old (literally). Called back and got a different customer service rep who said the upper needed is often the culprit and this sometimes needs to get cleaned out once to two times per week. So I cleaned the two sides of the upper needle out with a paperclip, ran a rinse and black gunk came out. Next cup brewed totally to the top super fast. Give that a shot before whacking it.

My Keurig is just two months out of it's warranty when this problem started. Found this site while I was descaling and thought, what the heck, give it a try. Well, it worked. The first whack on the bottom and I could hear air escaping (like a burp) and presto, all better. My pump was making strange sounds and the water was running back into the reservoir causing only a half a cup brew. I think over time, air must get into the lines and it creates this issue. To the guy that first decided to try the old "give it a good whack" solution, you should receive an award. Well done my friend! well done.

ok...so initially i was thinking everyone flipping and smacking their expensive coffee makers was a wee bit crazy, but after about 3 months of off-again on-again partial cups of coffee (the rest of the water that should be going through the pod emptied back into the reservoir) i thought i was gonna go crazy! so after keurig's suggestion of using a paperclip to clean the exit needle failed yet again, i decided i had nothing to lose but a partial cup of coffee and tried the unthinkable. my first attempt i did not unplug the machine, removed water res., flipped it, smacked it about 6 good whacks and...still no good. the second attempt i unplugged it, flipped it, dealt it another several good strong whacks, and when i plugged it back in...woo hoo!!! it's a new years miracle. same thing just started happening to the one at work and i'll definitely be trying this trick on it tuesday morning. with any luck this solution isn't just a temporary bandaid to an annoying problem. thanks everyone!

First of all, making coffee shouldn't be so dang difficult! I bought the Keurig from Costco just 3 weeks ago. I love it when it works as designed although I woke up today to a temperamental machine. The initial problem was it wasn't drawing water from the reservoir. Took my Sonicare toothbrush to the part that the reservoir sits on as well as the dispenser head (I found this on YouTube) - NOW it was drawing water!! Bad news - it wasn't brewing nearly the right amount of coffee! Found this forum - tried the suggested beat down of the machine - (beat it like A DIRTY LITTLE BLANKET!)and........ My Keurig is exactly 1 year old (I received it for xmas last year)and out of warranty-- and just yesterday began brewing 1/2 cups. I descaled-- twice-- yesterday, to no avail. Just found this site and took the advice to flip it over and beat it.

I put a folded dish towel on the bottom of the machine to prevent the hand pain others have experienced, and whacked 5 times really hard.

So far, so good. I have full test brew cups coming through. Have not made coffee yet, still flushing the damn thing to get rid of the vinegar smell.

I'll have to give the flipping it over and smacking it up a try. We've learned that burping it seems to sort of work. But, really it is a poor solution. I get that there is some sort of air lock internal to the system as testing without a coffee pod makes no difference.

We are weekend only coffee drinkers, so usually that first cup is the problem partial cup or no fill cup.

The vinegar soak make sense for regular use, especially for people with Hard or high dissolved solids water. Same as your tea kettle, scale will build up and it needs to be re-dissolved with a light acid (aka vinegar).

My only questions is for those of you on your 3rd machine ... really, why? After the 2nd ... give up and buy a new product? (i.e. Tassimo, Nespresso)

We've had at least 3 other Keurigs and all have experienced this exact same problem, but generally not until well after the warranty period expired. My husband discovered that by smacking the top of the machine one or two times resolved the issue of short cups. When I asked him how he even thought to do this, his answer was "that's how guys fix things". We've only had our latest Keurig less than a year and have de-scaled only twice (coinciding with the annual time changes), we just ran into a short-cup problem yesterday. Since we use our home Keurig more than anyone I know, we'll employ this "fix" when necessary because it's nearly impossible for me to think about giving up my k-cup coffee!

If your Breville is also making grinding noises and shutting off after making a short cup, it can't get enough water. If you are using the supplied filter, take it out, empty the tank, flip the tank over and look for cloth from the inside of the filter to be clogging the inlet valve. I wasted 6 months futzing around with this and now it works perfectly! !!

I recently purchased the Kuerig b70 Platinum model. I love it, everyone loves it! I ave had it for less than 2 weeks and i am now noticing that it seems to be putting less in my cup. I thought that it was because i was using a different cu, and it was an illusion, so i went back to the prior cup. It seemed to still be less than i am used to seeing. I asked the other users of the coffee maker what they thought, and they also have come to the same conclusion that it is making less. I have tried all of the cleaning, and troubleshooting. Beat it like it owed me money, and tried the flush through the intake port as well. Same results. I got on the phone and am pleased with the service. Kuerig is sending me another unit. But while i am waiting for it, of course i am still troubleshooting this one. My question for the users in this forum, is how many ounces of just water will it produce on the 12 oz. setting? In my measureing cup, i am getting about 1 1/3 cup...this is just over 11 oz. maybe there is nothing wrong with my unit after all? Does it inded actually brew 12 oz?

yep... I figured that bulletin board was loaded with pranksters, but... descaling was getting me no where. I tried the stuff that Keurig sells as well, to no avail... took the water resovoir off, brought it over the sink, balled up my fist and hit hit in five different places... pretty hard at that. My first hurt... I was still thinking... "Well, that was a waste"... I loaded it with water and viola!!! Thing is brewing full cups once again. Amazing.

I was getting a little frustrated due to the fact that the coffee maker was less than a year old and produced only half cups. I did all the recommended things like cleaning the nozzle with a paper clip and trying to descale. I use purified water with the unit so I didn't anticipate any problems. I finally did as suggested and took off the water reservoir, turned it upside down and slapped it hard 3 times. It worked like a charm! Thanks for the suggestion! Happy Holidays!

I had run the descale process twice, tried blowing air into the rubber thing at the top of the reservoir.

Turning it over and hitting the bottom a few times worked well.

This is a replacement unit under warranty. I wish I had tried this on the old one before I threw it away.

For months my Keurig was pouring half cups. I had tried hitting it upside down in the past with no success. I had accepted the fact that I would just brew each cup twice to get a full cup. But, today it started pouring 1/10 cups. I got frustrated with it and turned it upside down and started hammering on the bottom as hard as I could. My hand still hurts as I type this....but I just poured my first full cup in a long time!

For those who have tried this method with no success... just hit it harder! :)

quick answer: push cups all the way down on the bottom pin.
Reasoning: A lot of comments about possible clogged pins, covering overpressure, and internal plumbing nightmares. I started to think that maybe the needle was dull and the bottom of the k-cup might not be fully past the opening in the pin. After observing where the cup tends to sit after being punctured it looks a bit high. So I've started to reseat the kcup so it's as close to flush with the top as possible.
This problem has always been sporadic for me so I can't confirm if this solution will continue to work or if I've just been lucky

I have had 3 of these Keurigs, and all have had this problem. I can't believe I didn't look for a solution on the internet before I took the other 2 back, and countless descaling sessions, and numerous morning starting with a curse, while I hit the brew button again, in order to get a full cup.
I turned it upside down over the sink, smacked it hard several times with my hand, and plugged it back in, and voila! Full sized travel cups worth of coffee again...AMAZING! Thanks so much for the advice from everyone!

I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with my machine for a couple of months now. I've been holding my finger over the little white rubber part so water wouldn't drip back into the reservoir to get a full cup. I finally decided to do a Google search to see if anyone else was having the same problem. That being said, I CAN'T WAIT to smack it around a few times to see if it works! I'll keep you posted.

May not be recommended but the give it a good smack worked like a charm for me as well. It's obviously an issue with the machine and they really need to work on it however I love my Keurig and basically just wanted it to work again and now it does.

Bought the mini-Keurig for my mother for Christmas last year. She mentioned it had quit brewing a full cup and she was very disappointed in it. I said I would check to see if it was a common problem and what we needed to do to get it fixed. Found this thread, we laughed about it but I said what do we have to lose? OMG! It actually fixed the problem on the first time! Water shot out like the day she got it. AND her My-K-Cup had never worked properly and now it does! Thanks for the advice - I hope this helps someone.

I raised two children, and never believed in spanking as discipline, but this is one misbehaving child that deserves it! Just tell it beforehand "this will hurt me more than it hurts you" (and it will, if you use your bare hand like I did!). Problem solved. Be aggressive - it is a resilient product. If you used your bare hand, you can't hit it hard enough to break it. Just be careful with a mallet.

Our B60 had the same problem, we tried the hitting thing and it didn't work. Here's the deal; under the water tank where the water goes into the unit there is a strainer. When this strainer gets clogged the unit gets less than the amount of water needed for a full cup. Banging the unit may or may not dislodge the gunk. The strainer is not easily accessible from the top but you'll need to find a way to clean it, a stream of water or something like that may work.
To fix this properly here's what I did.
1. Removed the screws from the metal base and removed the base, there's a permanent ground wire or three riveted to the base so it won't completely detach from the unit.
2. Removed the two screws holding the water inlet port in place and pull the water inlet port out of its socket.
3. Clip off the zip tie that connects the water inlet port to the union and now the inlet port is free, well, almost, the little blue LED is still attached, but that's ok, we just needed access to the inlet port.
4. Using a small amount of compressed air, blow out the inlet port in the direction opposite to water flow until all the gunk is out.
5. Reassemble (put a new zip tie on) and enjoy.

My last keurig was replaced for free due to this problem. They wanted me to send back the old k cup holder so I couldn't use the old machine again. So I sent it back.

Now, about 6 months into using the new one, same problem developed: brewing tiny cups about 60% of the time. So i googled the problem, found this site, and gave the thing a good spanking on the bottom. Fixed and still fixed a week later.

So I went and got my old one from my basement, did this trick and that one's working now too! Went on ebay and got a used kcup holder for $5, and now I have two working keurigs for the price of one!!

I watched her do it three times with out any luck. So, I thought it must be my turn to beat up on the Keurig. So, I began to punish the little Keurig and again no luck.
Well, I thought about the rubber mallet and thought I will kill that little Keurig. So, I began to thrash its bottom side until my hand hurt...So, I switched hands and finish its punishment. *PRESTO* It works...So, don't give up... beat that thing likes it deserves to be beat.

Never would I have thought "spanking" the machine could possibly be a solution. I had to spank it twice. First time, no change, after the second time it's pouring a full 10oz cup of coffee. I'll be damned it worked. What led to the problem still remains a concern. Here's to drinking a fresh brewed cup of coffee again without having to run the machine more than once.

Question is, how long will this "repair" last? How often will this happen? This is a relatively new machine.

Well, I searched the internet this morning, frustrated after several months of 1/2 cups, to find a solution. ...and yes, the "Turn upside down and HIT it" method worked for me. It is likely that there was/is an excessive amount of scaling build-up in the machine and possibly a small valve that is not allowed to function properly when the build-up occurs. Whatever the reason, it just brewed a full cup of tea for me... Now, I have an extra cup of freshly brewed Earl Grey tea sitting on the counter if anyone wants it...

I had the same problem with short cups. Tried descaling and it worked a couple of times but I would have the same problem with water dripping back into the reservoir, resulting in short cups again. First it worked for a few weeks after descaling, then a couple of days, then not at all. Turning it upside down and slapping the bottom and sides worked! Thanks!

Out of the blue my mini-Kuerig stopped pulling water through--it would heat up and just produce a few drips through the K-cup. Cleaned the heck of it and decided to search the internet for solutions before descaling and voila! I found this posting and beat the heck out of the bottom of the machine and shook it around; and now back to normal full cup brews! Genius!

If you have one, use a rubber mallet. I used my hand at first, which didn't work. Then tried the mallet a few times. Better at first but not back to snuff. Then tried again, whacking firmly but not brutally - you can break the plastic housing if you're not careful. You'll know you fixed it when water stops dripping into the reservoir from the white plastic vent nozzle at the top of the reservoir. And yes, it works.

I worked on my brewer 3 hours this morning taking it apart finding nothing wrong. I called custumer support they are sending out a new B70. so I said what do I have to lose I took it outside turned it upside down and proceeded to beat the sheet out of the bottom with a fist it felt so good.
I took it back in pluged it up and it worked fine.
customer service said that it couldn't be fixed they were sending me a new one just need to send back the k cup holder for proof of ownership.

I had a problem with my Cuisinart SS-700 not brewing a full cup first thing in the morning, but the second cup was fine. Then I went on vacation for two weeks and when I returned, it would never make a full cup of coffee. It would spit water out of the vent when it was pumping in water and when it was brewing. I ran probably 3 reservoirs of hot water through it to no avail. I decided to turn off the auto-off function that I had set to an hour and let it sit on all day long. When I got up this morning, it brewed a full cup perfectly without any water coming out of the vent. Either it's a miracle, or the machine just likes to be on. Either way, I'm glad it is working again!

IT WORKS! I was getting the issue where the brewer would make a half cup or no cup at all. Tried descaling, no help. Then I noticed when I made a cup, water actually moved back INTO the reservoir! A firm hand to the bottom of the machine did the trick. THANK YOU to the original poster, you saved me from buying a new machine!

so after trying the paperclip trick and still having water go back into the tank I (all the while laughing at myself) i flipped over my kurig and slapped it on the bottom. the first time i had it on the counter and slapped it this way. When i flipped it over and plugged it in it was not happy and made really bad sounds and still was putting water into tank. The next time i flipped it over and held it out with the other hand and slapped it....hooray!!! full cups of coffee again....

LOL....I wasn't even sure my Keurig wasn't working properly...I thought the inconsistent size was just part of using this machine. When I found this thread I tried the upside down and a good beatin' and IT REALLY WORKS...Ran just water through in a measuring cup and 5 times the same amount....

Had the keurig awile, went thru a few descales, but today literally stopped and ran water back into tank for the first time. After LMAO at the entries here I tried it. IT WORKED!!! Upside down and a few spanks, about a 1/4 of water came out of somewhere you/i wouldnt expect, refilled the tank and worked like new. Thanks for the informative and humerous answers.

How in the world can this many people be complaining about the same defect with the same machine when some of the units are only a few weeks old?? This has all of the hallmarks of a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission and then onto a class action lawsuit.

I'm an engineer at hart so always start with the smallest hammer first then head for the sledge hammer in increments. Well I did the paper clip (knowing full well that this was not the problem). We use filer water and I had descaled it (a B60) not so long ago.

UNPLUG THE MACHINE FROM THE WALL.

I was worried about the electronics getting wet so I made sure that the display was higher than the tank(s) when I turned it upside down to empty the water, to my surprise when I turned it over very little water came out! Shook it around hard for a bit and gentile taps. On testing I was getting 90% of a full cup and a small amount of water coming out of the vent. Unplugged again and repeated the upside down procedure, this time with a bigger hammer (flat palm of hand) on the bottom we now have full cups of coffee and no flow out of the vent!!!

Next time I may spend time and take it apart as I need to know why we have an air lock!

My Keurig started only brewing 1/4 of a cup (that tasted horrible) and the rest of the water was going back into the water tank. No lie, taking the water holder off and turning the machine over and smacking it actually works! I figured after reading all the posts about it I'd give it try before trying the de-scaling method. Sure enough I turned the machine over, smacked it about 10 times,...shook it,...water dripped out. I plugged them machine back in, hit brew (used just water to test it) and sure enough it was brewing a full size cup again! Thanks all for this tip,...it works!

Customer service department at keurig were amazing and so professional. The women kindly instructed me exactly what to do to the keurig machine......which involved a paper clip and a measuring cup and now my keurig is back to working wonderfully.Thanks so much Keurig customer service!!

Thanks guys for the tip. As weird as it sounds it did the trick. I slapped a few times on the bottom, and turned it upside down and shook it. Ran it with just hot water once and repeated it and that fixed the problem ( for now ). It is brewing full cups again.

My Keurig was short-filling the cups and I turned it upside-down and gave it several hard whacks. When I plugged it back in, it had a new problem: It shut itself off before it got to the "ready to brew" instruction. Oh no! Thought I broke it for good. I tried a series of shutting off and on and pressing different buttons to no avail--it kept shutting it self off before brewing. Well, I thought I might as well try it again, and turned it over and gave it a few more whacks and shook it like a child with a piggy bank! Voila! It started working again AND it now properly fills the cup. Crazy!!! :-)

This is my 2nd Keurig because I had same problem w/ my last one but didn't google a "cure" so I exchanged it. This one is only 4 mos old, so I was reallllly bummed when it started the half cup brewing about a week ago! I turned it upside down, banged on it 3-4 times, shook it for 10 seconds, plugged her back in and I'm all SMILES!!! My husband could hardly believe it! THANK YOU THANK YOU!

I turned my machine upside down, shook it and the SLAMMED it down on the counter. One of the two actions fixed the water being pumped back into the reservoir. I now have full cups. There must be a valve stuck or an air bubble.

I was getting half cups and at the same time water was coming out of the white spout and going back into the reservoir. I turned it upside down and shook it and I'm now getting full cups again. Thanks for the advice. I was about to throw the POS out.

Don't you know there are electronics that will be affected if you turn your brewer upside down and water gets loose in there? What if it comes out and sprays on you [hot]?

All I have to do is descale it like this: fill the tank all the way with white vinegar, brew it down all the way until the add water light comes on, then let it sit with the power on for 4 hours. I have to run 2-3 tanks of water through to get that nasty smell out, but your Keurig will work like new. I have to do that every few months.

I tried what all of you below did by turning my B70 machine upside down and giving it a good "whack" or two. I tried to brew a full cup and only got 1/2 with the other 1/2 going back into the reservoir. I tried it again, but this time beat it to a pulp and again only got 1/2 a cup with the other 1/2 going back into the reservoir. So, after having 3 with this problem in 1 1/2 years time, I decided to give up the hope that this product is a good one and got a normal coffee maker. Yes, cleaning a coffee pot isn't that enjoyable every time I make coffee, but at least I am not frustrated any longer. Plus, my coffee tastes great!

Just received my Kuerig from my son and daughter in law. They had it about six months and decided to get a Mr. Coffee for the convenience of a full pot. Now I know why. My daughter suggested that the machine needed descaling, so when I got home I did just that and brewed my first half cup at full cup setting. I am glad I found this site because when I smacked the machine... viola!!...full cup. However this only lasted for one day then it was back to half cups or even less. This time I used a straw and blew air through the hole where the tank drains to clear out any trapped air and the machine is working great. I hope this fix continues to give me full cups and I will let you guys know if it doesn't

I have wanted a Keurig for soooo long and since I am the only person in my household who drinks coffee, I felt like I was actually SAVING money by not making a pot and then it going to waste. (This was my rationale to my hubby!!) Anyways, about 3-4 months after receiving this machine, I, too, had the half cup issue. I would descale it several times a month but basically to no avail. So what did I do this morning? I smacked the crap out of it! WHO KNEW???? Not only did it brew a full cup, but my cup literally runeth over! No seriously, completely over!! It had tons of crap in it! Whomever finally went postal on their machine and realized that it was a cure, THANK YOU!!

and I thought that this was one of those sites that some geek set up as a practical joke, but I was so frustrated with this machine, I've only had it a day and it started brewing a tablespoon of coffee. I turned it over and smacked it about 4 or 5 times on the bottom (considering I was a little peeved it crapped out so fast)and I was completely astonished.
The damn thing works perfectly. How in God's name is this possible? I guess its true what they say, "If you can't fix it, use a bigger hammer"

We use the Zero Water Filter before filling the Keruig, so did not feel that descaling was an issue in why we were not getting the right amount of water dispensed today. I decided to Google the problem, and was skeptical about giving our Keurig a shake and smacking it, but after trying that, we are back in business!! Thanks for the suggestion, and the testimonials!!!

Descaled my Keurig platinum when descale message appeared. Machine was unplugged for 7 days while on vacation. Have had the half cup problem from time to time in past but always seemed to recover on its own. While descaling with vinegar I noticed light volume coming out and hot vinegar being poured back in the resevoir. Then the blue light on the lcd screen flickered three times and went dark. Shortly after the blue light in the bottom of the resevoir went dark. I used the upside down shake and beat and the machine drained hot vinegar immediately after plugging back in with full volume. Unfortunately it is now completely dark and flashing not ready on the dark lcd screen. Machine is 14 months old and I'm afraid this may be terminal. leaving it unplugged overnight and will see what happens in the morning.

I've had my keurig since June, and descaled it because it was having issues making a full cup of coffee. I must have gone through an entire gallon of vinegar. Didnt try and paperclips or other things, and read this thread and decided to hit my machine.

Don't be gentle! I hit it gently the first time, and a little more came out, hit it kinda hard the second time and even more came out, and then full on flipped it over on my bath mat and seriously beat the hell out of it.

Now i have a full cup of coffee.

I have tried for over 2 hours with cleaning my unit with distilled vinegar, still only ahalf cup. Then I tries shaking the unit and reading different comments about beating on the bottom of the unit, still only half cups. then I called Keurig and had the nicest lady helping me, she had me clean the needles with a paper clip, done everything she said and still only a half cup. She told me to use the vinegar again but I couldnt I had already used all I had. She told me to do it again tomorrow and then see if it worked. I hung up from her and tried one more time with abuse. I unpluged it, took off the drip tray, took off the water tank and then turned it upside down. I didnt beat on the bottom of it, I only shook it real hard up and down for about 15 seconds and presto, I got my first full cup of hot water. Tomorrow morning will be coffee. UNBELIVEABLE, just try shaking real hard and not beating.

I, like many of you out there, had been dealing with 1/2 cups. I tried EVERYTHING. Cleaning the spike, cleaning the water tank, using vinegar through the system, bottled water, NOTHING worked. Then I read this site, I decided that I might as well give it a try and hit the machine a few times. It worked instantly! I'm so glad I found this website and all of your comments. I cannot believe it! I have been not been able to make a full cup of coffee now since about a month after getting my Keurig has a Christmas present. I've done the whole cleaning thing and had to first press for a large cup and then finish it off with the small cup--sometimes it overflowed and sometimes would give me a full cup this way. So, my son and I just banged the bottom of the maker and tried it again---it worked!! It brewed a full cup of coffee! Thank you everyone for posting this very helpful and successful information!

I've been experiencing the "half cup" issue with my Keirig for a year now. It started to happen almost a month from when I purchased it for my new home. For a year I've tried everything but the "wacking/banging" method. I wish I had done this so long ago! No more half-cups! I just removed the water resovior and drip tray, held over the sink and started hitting it. Plugged it in, made a cup and it worked again!

This is a water retention issue.For the real stubborn cases that banging and shaking wont fix,(1) remove the water reservoir (2) unplug the machine.(3)remove the bottom plate by removing the screws NOTE there are wires attached by a rivet to the bottom plate,they are ground wires,leave them on and move the plate out of the way.(4)remove one of the two tie wraps joining the main hose that is going to the steel reservoir (not the hoses on the pump)the hose you want will be on the left bottom corner when the unit is upside down,with the square end facing you. (5)pull the hoses apart and hold over a bucket or sink while moving the unit side to side and top to bottom.you will notice squirts of water coming out the open hose as the unit is moved around,this is the trapped water causing the problem.keep moving it around until no more water will come out while moving the unit .you are done, put a new tie wrap on after rejoining the hoses and replace the bottom and put the screws back in. fill reservoir and test you should get a full cup.NOTE bottom has to fit under three slide holders on the round side before it can be put down in place,a little tricky but do-able.

I tried doing everything I could find on the internet ti fix my probelem of my Keurig B70 not brewing a full cup. I tried cleaning out the ports (top and bottom) multiple times, I tried de-scaling 4 times. The first time I even used the expensive Keurig de-scaler at ~$12.00 a bottle. Nothing worked, so if figure what the heck might as well try beating the thing. Turned it upside down over the sink and beat it like it owed me money. Still nothing (except a sore palm) So I ended up calling Keurig I spent about 15 minutes on the phone with the tech before he declared my Keurig dead. Since we got it last Christmas it was still under warranty. So they are sending me a new one. And I don't even have to send the old one back, all I have to do is send back the lower cup and funnel section. So anybody that is having a problem and your system is less than a year old you are still covered. Just give them a call.....couldn't be easier.

As a mechanical designer, you should never "bang things" to get them to work. However, after trying alll the normal fixes I said "why not". I had to flip and bang twice, but it worked. It shouldn't...but it did.

Yellowy-brown water with calcium chunks (like salt)in a full large cup. My mornings have been returned to their normal chaos instead of the recent chaos with angst :P

I found this site because our keurig was only making half cups of coffee. When I told my husband that we had to hit the keurig on the bottom he thought I was nuts. After going 32 hours with no power thanks to Hurricane Irene I took that frustration out on the keurig and it really worked!!! I had a full cup of coffee today!!

My Keurig was doing the same thing...brewing half cups on the large cup setting, sometimes not even half a cup. I saw this idea and figured it couldn't hurt since the thing wasn't working right anyway. I turned it upside down, gave it a few good taps and am now enjoying my large cup of coffee. I have been having problems with water running back into the reservoir for weeks. I read somewhere to clean out the basket and around the needles, so I did, to no avail, so I had resigned to holding my finger over the white piping in order to get the correct amount of coffee. Tonight, I was researching one last time and came across this post! I whacked the thing a few times with a rubber spatula on the bottom, then also cleaned out the piping with a paper clip and it works again!

I was just looking to buy a replacement unit and decided to look again for a possible fix. I saw your recommendation to turn the unit upside and tap it. I did this and IT WORKED. I AM SHOCKED AND VERY HAPPY. THANK YOU

My Keurig was making 1/2 cups when pushing the large cup selection. It was also spilling water from the vent, into the water container area, when brewing. After doing the vinegar cleanout, and getting no results I removed the water container unit and turned the machine upside down. I tapped the bottom firmly for about 1 minutes with a rubber hammer to release any calcium deposits. I set the machine up again and ran a "large" cup. The machine works perfect. If you turn your machine on and off, the cooling down may be creating calcium deposits by the vent release, inside the machine. When you brew, you raise the water pressure, the calcium interferes with the seal and creates a leak for water to run up the vent. Just my opinion.

Since our Keurig (purchased last January) is my fav. appliance in the house, I was feeling quite anxious when my husband threatened to drive over it with his Jeep as it has been brewing 1/2 cups of coffee all week long. He had given it a few whacks just out of frustration...but when I went online and saw these posts, I told him he might be onto something. So this morning, he turned the silly thing upside down and smacked it a few times...and unbelievably it works!! My husband thinks just the act of turning it upside down may be "burping" the line...but the whacking feels good too! Yay, the Keurig can stay!

ok i never respond to these things but after hours of frustration and coming up blank, i tried the "hitting" method and at first it didn't work i could hear the machine working but no liquid was making it's way into my cup, i tryed cleaning the needles and descaling..still nothing..after several "hard wacks on the bottom and sides of the machine turned upside down over the sink..success!..by the way i used this method on the b30 mini....thank you so much for this tip i was about to throw it away!

My Keurig also started producing smaller cups, but only on the larger cup size. I did the cleanings and it would only work for a short time. I noticed that when I selected the larger cup size, the outlet valve pumped water back into the water dispenser. I blocked the water flow and listen as the pump worked harder to push. The Keurig cut off. I unplugged it, plugged it back in and it has been working since. I think the back pressure cleared the line.

Okay -- I am not a mechanical person. I got up this morning and my Keurig would not brew more than a tablespoon of coffee. I left the house without coffee and sad. I knew it was doomed and I would either have to buy a new one, or go back to a traditional coffee maker. My machine was a 2010 Christmas gift, so is only 8 months old, but I have no receipt or proof of purchase.

When I got home from work, I turned it off and on, unplugged it, tried reprogramming it -- all to no avail.

In any case, I found this site, and figured what the heck. I took the water thing off and then turned the machine upside down over the sink and slapped the bottom of it 5 or 6 times. I reassembled everything and skeptically put a cup under the spout and pressed the button and "Voila!" I had a full, hot cup of water.

I woke up this morning to find my latest Keurig (we are on replacement #3) brewing partial cups after 6 months of good behavior. Since I am tired of calling Keurig and jumping through their hoops, this morning I decided to jump online and see if it was just me. Thankfully, or unfortunately I guess, I see a lot of people are having this problem. Keurig always wants to blame my water or lack of discipline in de-scaling the machine. I do have hard water but we spent a lot of money last fall on a water softening system and my water for everything else is fine (laundry, dishes, showers...etc). Not to mention, I de-scale as I am supposed to. I laughed out loud when I read that some of you suggested "smacking" the coffee maker. Ignoring my first instinct that you were out of your minds, I gave in (mostly for my kids' sake, because I am quite unpleasant to deal with when I don't get my coffee).
Sure enough, it worked! Don't get me wrong, I find it more than unacceptable that I need to beat an expensive appliance to get it to work properly. But at least for the next few minutes with a full cup of coffee in my hand, I will take it!

Our Keurig started doing small cups today. Found this site, my husband smacked it a couple of times and it works great again! Thanks (even though I have been eyeing up getting a colored Keurig. I guess that can wait until our budget can afford it!)

Owned our machine two years, started acting up after one, babied it, descaled it, half cups, NO cups, water flooding the counter, grounds in the cup, reservoir backfilling - you name it, we experienced it. Ready to throw in the water-soaked towel and throw out the Keurig...

...until I found this site :)

Forced my sleepy hubby off the couch at midnight and made him spank our naughty coffeemaker so we could each have effortless joe in the a.m. We immediately heard the telltale 'gurgle' and saw the trapped water come rolling out. Wish we had thought of this! Thx so much! Will be sharing this tip with other Keurig users!!! Best part of all? No money was spent!

I am so thankful for finding these comments!!! I tried "spanking" my mini plus Keurig brewer and it totally worked! My husband and I thought it broke and were getting so frustrated that we may have to buy another coffee maker. We are very happy with the results of this trick. I'm sure it has saved us alot of time and $!!!!

Got an easier way to solve this problem.
Remove the water tank, check that the float is
moving free, then use a straw and blow air into the hole at the bottom of the machine (where the tank sits and water is sucked up into the machine).
Have used this method just one time on a replacement B70 for another that was doing the same thing. Been over a month and still working perfect.
I believe that this method removes any trapped air in the line and it corrects the problem of small amounts of water.

I use only distilled water (have my own distiller) and the brewer is less than a year old. Went to some Keurig Tech Site and they wanted $30! Yeah, that was not happening! So, I found all of you somewhat disgruntled comrades...turned the machine upside down and spanked it! Must not have done it right the first time...did it again...a little harder and on the right side of the machine. Houston, we have coffee in the appropriate amounts! The water stopped returning to the reservoir...which, since there is a return, tells me Keurig knows of this problem, but refuses to do anything about it! Thanks for your help and for saving me some $$$$$!

To add to the echoes of relief and coffee addictions fulfilled....I just took out a lot of pent up Keurig anger on my poor fancy coffee maker. Not quite sure that I should be overly enthused, I ran it with no coffee in it, just to see if my cup would indeed be 1/2 full. To my great relief it totally worked! My morning and my sanity owes this website Big time! :)

I did not think this would work. I de-scaled 2 times with white vinegar. No help. Then I found this page, flipped that sucker over- smacked it 3 times- it 'gurgled' flipped it back right 'gurgled' again- sucked up some more water and is working great. Forgot to mention tried the paper clip, pin, went out and bought pipe cleaners for the piercing holes- that did not help!

I was having the same problem. I'd select mug size and get expresso size! Would brew twice with same K-cup. So frustrating. Came across this website and tried your fix. Turned it upside down and smacked it a few times. It worked! Thanks for suggestion. Hope it continues to work.

We've been getting short-cupped for over a month now, even after descaling 4 times. Finally, I got fed up and Googled. It brought me to this site, and the suggestion to smack the machine. We've been struggling with our Keurig for months now...we're on our 3rd machine in less than 2 years. We kept having the same problem, it would go into brew cycle & just sit there. I tried banging it (upright) several times, which would work off & on, but a month ago it stopped altogether. After hearing my husband say he was going to throw it into the pool, I decided to check online one last time for ideas. We tried the "upside-down" trick today and it worked like a charm. Seems good to have cup of coffee again!

As my wife diligently toiled away at analyzing our Breville maker that wouldn't brew the proper cup size; measuring the output of each cup size, changing the filter, preparing to run a vinegar solution - I was googling the problem. After reading these post I walked over picked up the machine, held it over the kitchen sink, and proceeded to whack it three or four good times on it's bottom. I admit it, I felt guilty but it worked!! Brewing again just like the day we bought it.

Just noticed that my Keurig started brewing "half cups". At first I thought I just pressed the wrong button...after all it is morning, right! But when it continued, I knew it wasn't that. I got online this morning and found this site. Can't believe it worked. There must have been some water in the pumping/dispensing system because after a good whack on the right side I could hear noise inside of the machine and then water started leaking out. Turned it upright and brewed myself a FULL cup of coffee....AMAZING!

Just last night my machine brewed about a 1/2 cup of coffee. I thought I just pressed the wrong button even though I only ever use one of them. This morning I made sure I pressed the right button but still got a 1/2 cup. I was not happy since my machine just passed the 1 year mark and warranty gone. I got online and found this page with so many people with the same issue as the one I have. I thought wow! they want me to beat the snot out of my machine??? This usually works with kids but hey, who knows what do I have to lose? Well I took off the water tank and set it aside, turned the machine over and smack!,Smack! SMACK! SMACK! Yes I hit it multiple times and actually quite hard on all sides and even the bottom. I then put the machine back together and started the brew process. Well, the machine cowered in the corner but it again makes coffee just the way I like it and of course the cup size I choose. Thanks guys for all your help. The technique works like a charm.

Mine has been brewing half cups for about a week. I finally found my receipt and found it's 5 days over warantee period. Argh.

My wife and I had the exact same problem ... we had our Keurig Platinum for 4-5 months without any problems. Then one morning, we started getting half cups. My wife wanted to send it back. Me being me wanted to try to fix it myself first. 5 seconds into my Google search I came across this site. Hesitant at first, and against my wifes pleading not to do it, I did it. Took the reservoir off, held the unit upside down, a few whacks on the sides and bottom, and crossed my fingers. After whipping off the little bit of water that came out of the machine, plugged it in, and like magic, FULL CUPS OF COFFEE AGAIN! WOOHOO! Thank you all for the DIY tip! I'll wait for a more serious issue to have Keurig replace my machine! TRY IT! ; )

After a love/hate relationship with my brewer for the past few months, I was ready to toss it off the balcony!! It kept brewing irregular sized cups..seemed to have a "mind of it's own"! I tried giving it a good whack or two, which didn't work for me. But when I turned the machine upside down and shook it a bit it actually worked!! It no longer "spills" water back into the reservoir like it was doing, and actually fills my cup to the desired cup size. Whoever figured this out, you are AWESOME!! Thanks to you, I am once again pleasant and well-caffeinated in the morning. Whatever did we do before the internet?? :)

I was having the same issue for months and did all of the maintenace work in the manual with no luck. After reading the posts here, I emptied it in the sink and shook it a few back back and forth. Lo and behold it brewed a full cup.

I should have checked the internet several months ago and would have saved a lot of aggravation.

We are the biggest supplier of coffee brewers in the world, so just because some people on a website have this problem, that is a small amount of people compared to the millions that have our brewer and never have issues, and please don;t forget that we stand behind our brewers and will replace them".

After searching several postings to find what my problem was, I ran across Chris's smack it...read his comment and seen it was my problem. I tried it and it worked...LOL now all my water goes in the cup like it is suppose to instead of back in the water reservoir and I get my full cup of coffee. Thanks a million!!!!

I read the comments here and no sh**, it worked. Stated on Keurig's website looking for help because the "vent" was returning as much water into the tank as was going into the cup. I cleaned the needle but no change. After reading the postings here I removed the tank and tray, held the maker still with my left hand and gave it a good smack on the right side. Now I get a full cup of coffee and no water is flowing back into the tank. TRY IT.

Sorry for the stupid question, but do you remove the reservoir and turn IT upside down and smack it, or do you remove the reservoir and take the ACTUAL MACHINE upside down and smack it? I've had this "half cup" problem for months and I can not wait to try this method out! THANKS!!!

i posted here March 22, 2011. since using the "smack the machine" method on that day, i haven't had any trouble at all with brewer -- it has worked perfectly.

this morning it sounded "funny" when i went to make a cup and, sure 'nuff, it short-cupped. i removed the reservoir and the cup stand, held the thing upside down over the sink, shook it, "wiggled" it left-right-left, smacked it hard on the bottom. put it back in place, smacked it hard a couple of times on top, reassembled it, plugged it in and brewed a perfect cup of coffee.

will post again if any changes.

Thank you thank you thank you...I would stare at my Keurig and wonder, "why are you dumping water back into the reservoir??" and then brew two "cups" to get my travel mug full. Got the book out, nothing. Went to Keurig's site, nothing. Googled and ... voila. I "smacked" it pretty hard in that it sort of slid into the sink, but when I plugged it in and put the water reservoir back on, and brewed some hot choc for my daughter (as I had just brewed my coffee) it worked. No water back into the reservoir. THANK YOU. You saved me the trouble of bagging it up and taking it to...

(here comes the tip part of the title) Bed Bath & Beyond, where I bought it. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, period. I purchased a Tassimo to replace my first Tassimo machine and the coffee didn't taste right ...same box of discs, but tasted horrible. So, after trying many different discs with no luck, I took it back to BB&B in a bag with the manual and the receipt and told the girl behind the counter, "I hate my coffee maker" and she said "we don't want you to hate your coffee maker, we want you to love it - go get what you want". They gave me exactly what I paid for the Tassimo...which was the exact cost of the Keurig. Thus the Keurig entered my household. I have the manual and the receipt and will promptly take it back to BB&B for a new one if the day comes around that I can't fix it.

Thanks to this site and Jason and all of the other posts, I am saved the hassle of doing so!

Yup, its an air bubble. I got the problem fixed by removing the reservoir, turning the unit upside down and draining out the interior line. Rotated left and right while upside down and it worked. I was a little concerned about beating up my unit. This worked without the abuse. Good luck

Just turned it over the sink, banged it a few times and voila, good as new. Thanks to all you coffee gurus for all your high tech advice. I was ready to throw this machine away..so happy now :D)

What do you know! Turning it upside down and banging on it does the trick. Our had slowly started sending water back into the reservoir while making a cup. Eventually, it got to where it sent almost all of the water back in there, and it would take three attempts to make a cup! Today I tried it and I only got a few drips into the cup and nothing was going into the reservoir. Turning it over was not enough to fix it. You have to knock on it too. Works like new now! Thanks for your comments.

Tried Compressed Air, Descaling, Paper Clip..No luck..Tipped upside down few whacks on bottom..few on side just in case and great tasting coffee full cup again. You think companies would read how to fix their own machines. Who wants to be without coffee for a week and go through sending back mess. Good product but good companies admit their mistakes and help the customer in the best way possible.

 B60 pump or vapor lock prob

We bought a B60 a couple yrs ago and since then continue to have slow flow and 'short cup' brew problems. We clean needles, descale, flush and make sure hoses and other parts are all clear of obstructions, and maintain regularly per the manual to no avail. We're now reading on several blogs and websites to flip it upside down and smack it. Really?? It's obviously a pump priming, vapor lock, or pressure issue. Is there a technical fix to this very well documented problem? I'm sure there has been many trouble tickets submitted on it and somebody must know why this is happening. Thanks

Seriously...10 minutes from picking up the phone to Keurig and came across this site..Tried it and like all the others...it worked! Upside down over the sink, couple whacks and good as new! The vent was leaking into the resourvier and short cupping me. After this simple-easy fix all is good !

The last time I had to tap my Keurig was at the end of January.
As long as it's done when it sounds like it's trying to move water through the K-cup it apparently does something, maybe seats a valve, and I haven't had a bit of problem with the machine for almost 5 months now. I hope this doesn't jinx me.

OK, really? We spend $150 for a high end, totally convenient coffee maker and it is 6am and I am banging it, hitting it, smacking it, taking out all my "no coffee for you, Cass!" mornings out on it!!!! Guess what?????

IT WORKED!!!! I just got my first FULL cup of coffee in days!!!! Course, mind you, Keurig is sending me a brand new brewer this week, because if I am going to be hitting and smacking, I want that puppy to be brand "spanking" (sorry, had to!) new!!!!!

This is truly insane, though. Also, how many times per week does it need to be hit before it stops working again and needs to be smacked around once more?????

stumbled upon this website last night, and this morning i gave it a try. took the reservoir off, held the unit upside over the sink, gave a couple of smacks to the bottom and side and now it is as good as new!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!

If you have ever tried to siphon water from a hose, the Keurig seems to use the same principal. If there is a air bubble in the hose, suction is lost. Maybe that is what has happened in all of these instances and getting the air bubble out gives us our 9.25 ounces of great coffee! In other words....the hard tap on the side and top works!

I started having the "half cup" problem, and a quick Google search led me to this page.

I saw a bunch of folks stating that "hitting" the machine actually worked, so I decided to try it out and it really worked! First time around.

Just held if over the sinks, hit it a few times on the side, turned it upside down and gave it a few good whacks on it's side and on the bottom.

The next few cups (haven't got past that yet) were once again full-sized!

I can't belive it. Hitting it worked. I actually hit and and turned upside down and hit is some more. I'm wondering if air is getting in the lines and the pump loses is prime. Hit it and tipping it might work the air out of the lines.

I've been having problems with my keurig machine for weeks now. I cleaned the k-cup holder, but can't believe descaling the machine will fix it or be worth the huge hassle. I called customer service today and they just kept telling me to descale the machine. No suggestions to hit, no offer to replace the machine. I hung up on them. I brought it home (I can't descale it at work) and it spilled black gook all over the floor of my car. Angrier than ever, I'm going to plug it in at home and try whacking it. I hope it works. I am not impressed with keurig right now.

I don't know how many youtube videos I watched on troubleshooting my Keurig today and none of them worked. All I ended up with was a clean half cup expensive brewing machine. Stumbling across this web site and it's silly suggestion to whack it made no sense but what did I have to lose, it wasn't working right anyway. Holy Crap! Not only did I get to take my fustration out on the darn thing but it actually started working. Wonder if that would work for some employees that are only putting out halfway ;-) Just kidding. I can not believe it! We have been having the same problem as the rest of you. A half a cup of coffee. I have spent the better part of 3 days trying to figure out ~ WHY! Everything says to de-lime the machine (it shouldn't need yet). Anyway, that didn't work. I just wasted a Saturday afternoon. I stumbled across this sight and everyone was saying the same thing. "SMACK IT". REALLY? I spent $150 on a coffee maker and the way to "fix" it, is to smack it? Well ~ guess what ~ IT WORKED! Can you tell me what's wrong with this picture? If it is something as simple as a stuck valve ~ Keurig needs to look into this A.S.A.P. It looks like way too many of their customers are having the same problem ~ and ~ it should be taken care of right away!!

Does anyone else find this a bit ridiculous that we are having to whack a $150+ machine to get it to work? Wouldn't you find it odd if every time Starbucks (or Gloria Jean's or Caribou or wherever) made a drink they had to whack their espresso machine before it would work? Okay, maybe that is a silly comparison but the idea is the same. Hit the machine to make it work? Perhaps Keurig needs to lower the price for everyone or make a better machine. This is just plain silly... {Oh, and I'm on my 3rd machine and so far no hitting necessary! We'll see how long this lasts...}

Brewer was making less than half a cup at a time. We were almost ready to toss it out. My daughter and I hit the upper back part of the device a few times, then tipped it upside down and shook it. Low and behold, it started making full cups again!

Keurig customer service is amazing! Don't waste your time messing with the brewer when it's having brewing issues just call them at 1-866-901-2739 after a few trouble shooting walkthroughs they will send you a new upgraded model free of charge and all you have to do is send them back a small piece of the old brewer at your expense which only costs around 2 dollars to send. Obviously this means that they know their product will become defective over time but the fact that they are more than willing to replace it with no run-around is amazing. This is a sign of a great company with a great appreciation for their customers. Well done Keurig

I descaled, once website suggested sticking a paper clip in the holes so I did that, and then I stumbled across this "smacking" technique!

This seriously worked!! I smacked it pretty hard on the back and top when it was brewing and it stopped spitting water out the vent. Seriously it worked!

I have read in other websites there may be an issue with a check valve sticking, smacking it must unstick the valve. I was ready to throw the thing out, but it works like new now.

Customer service at Keurig was top notch. After a short phone conversation with a couple troubleshooting tips they are sending me a newer model at no cost. I refuse to 'rap' on the top of such an exspensive peice of equipment. No receipt was needed, they simply require the serial number and for me to return a small part off of my current model after I receive the replacement.

...that's suggested by some to fix the "small cup problem" seems to be the answer.

I had the problem with my machine. I don't use distilled water, but rather the result out of a ZeroWater pitcher (so it's really close) in the machine so it's not "scaling" which would be due to the dissolved solids (typically calcium ones- limestone...) in the water being cooked out of the water you're using if you're not using distilled or softened water.

You'll need to give the machine a firm open-handed rap on the back part of the top of the machine while it's doing a brew run. Once you do that, it resets a stuck part in the system that blocks things enough that it was flowing out the bypass vent and the brew process output.

My 5 month old Keurig started brewing partial cups and leaking water back into the reservoir through the vent. After descaling several times and turning the unit upside down....still partial cups. I figured I had nothing to lose by hitting the top of the unit during the brew cycle....That fixed it....

our brewer was brewing smaller cups and water was running back into the reservoir while brewing.

i recommend giving the machine a couple taps because after reading these comment, i did it and it worked!!! now my machine is brewing full cups.

Hi,

Just bought yesterday at Costco here in Halaifax NS. After machine prep I tried a coffee & noticed that the cup amount seemed small.
Got out the measuring cup out & measured the amount for each of the three size choices.
Sure enough they were all a few ounces short or more. I read all the comments here & decided to try the hit on the top rear of the machine when it starts to brew. It worked for me. Definitely an air problem in the system.
Anyway we'll see how it goes. It will be going right back to Costco if this new step stops working...-)

My short cup problem, as demonstrated by my plugging both holes in the air intake valve at the top of the reservoir (do not try this at home!), seems caused by an accumulation of air. Since then, the first cup after refilling and replacing the reservoir had intermittently run about 1 ounce short, which is about the same volume as the air that can be captured in the spring-loaded water stopper at the base of the reservoir. I've since found that it's an easy process when refilling to press up on the spring from the bottom of the reservoir while adding water (over the sink) until all remaining air bubbles have been expelled from this spring-loaded mechanism.

my husband just figured out that there is a diaphragm under the part that lifts up, that gets stuck open. That is why my Keurig was making half cups. When the diaphragm is open there is not enough draw on the system making water leak back into the reservoir. A good hit on the top got it working for us!

Had short cupping problems with my brewer, I shook upside down, descaled, cleaned needles, etc. The one thing that worked instantly was when the cup is brewing and the water is flowing back into the reservoir I gave the brewer a couple of wraps with my knuckles at the top back of the brewer and it immediately stopped. Now getting full cups, no problem!

I'd like to join the 'My Keurig takes more maintenance than my car" club. Just got off the phone with Keurig - they are sending the 3rd replacement in 2 years. I use all the fabulous tips, tricks and maintenance (I descale every month and use only filtered water) and after 6 months I'm back on the phone with them. One benefit of complaining (sweetly) is that they are getting quicker about offering to replace the machine.

What troubles me is that there seems to be no way to recycle the thing. I try to remove as much metal as possible, but it is hard to see another keurig in the landfill. This is the last time. Then it is back to my ol' coffee pot.

Had the same short cup problems with my Keurig B40 Elite brewer that was barely a month old. I tried the 'love pat' thwacks top on the front dispenser unit and the 'BB Trick', discussed in a different thread on this web site, both to no avail. Note that on my machine, water flowing back into the reservoir has never been an issue.

LeeBee's suggestion from February 19th worked for me. When I held my finger continuousely over BOTH of the holes in the white rubber air intake valve above the top rear of the reservoir when the unit was brewing, the water intake mechanism at the base of the water reservoir let out a great gurgling burp of air that had built up, probably gradually, every time I replaced the reservoir after filling it with fresh water.

Short cups always seemed to be a bigger problem for me right after filling and replacing the reservoir completely, rather than just topping of the remaining water. Seems to make sense.

So while I appreciate your attempt at making us all appear lazy, please note that while we didn't all take the time to write down EVERYTHING we did, we did do all of these things. I use filtered water and I descale every three months like clockwork. (Pretty much change the filter on the Brita then descale the Keurig.) Now Keurig wants me to descale every 2 months. What will it be next? Monthly? Weekly? Daily? How about if Keurig just puts out a better brewer? If you are going to sell me cheap merchandise then let the price fit the product.

My grandfathers taught me long ago the lesson that maintenance is king. So it is true with Keurig. Unfortunately, we have been conditioned as consumers to do the minimum when it comes to maintaining our goods. For example, descaling is what it is - a necessary,from time to time, operation, especially if one uses tap water that is unfiltered. However, well before descaling is definitely needed [brewing less than full size cups] one will notice a change in the taste of the k-cup coffee. A little word-play helps: stale equals scale. In other words, when one's favorite k-cup coffee begins to taste less than tasty, it's time to descale,don't be lazy, do it.

Let's move on here. What's that old saying; if something is going to go wrong, it will. No ifs or buts about it. So you're standing or sitting in front of your Keurig brewer and your cup is not runneth over. In fact, all you're getting is drips and drabs. STOP right there and relax. It's time to go to work. First things first; unplug the brewer from the wall. Then walk it over to the sink and turn it upside down to drain all of the water from the unit [be careful, the water may still be hot]. Secondly, it's time to do the "cleaning-the K-Cup-Portion-Pack-Holder-Assembly thing -just like it says in the owner's manual,folks And that means CLEAN the funnel & exit needle.

DO NOT PASS GO. Not just yet because you're not done yet. Now it's time to work under the hood, so to speak. Lift up the brewer handle to open up the unit. Look underneath the handle [hood] until you find another one of those nasty needle-like things - just like the exit needle on the inside of bottom of K-Cup Holder Assembly you just cleaned like a whistle - however, this new needle you have just found is the bigger brother of the other one. As such, it demands respect. Let me count the ways. One,you will notice a rubber gasket around it. Using two fingers remove this man-made collar by sliding it off towards you. Don't be surprised if it's dirty. Then wash the coffee grind gook off its rings. DO NOT SLIDE IT BACK ON JUST YET. Two, before you do,using the so-called tool [paperclip] loosen any clogs [this needle has a couple of orifices to wiggle and work the tool with]. Three, slide the rubber collar/gasket back onto big needle the way you found it. Four, and finally, perform the initial cleansing and first brew routine [plug brewer in - press power button - add water - lift the brewer handle - DO NOT PUT A K-CUP INTO THE K-CUP HOLDER ASSEMBLY - lower the brewer handle - place cup on plate - BREW Button will flash blue - PRESS the BREW button - it will flash red - then turn solid red when brewing begins - watch cup fill with water - empty cup full of waste water into sink].

Congratulations! You are ready to brew again your favorite brand/flavor of K-Cop coffee, etc.

So yesterday I wrote how I made 2 punctures in the kcups and that worked, but after reading all the comments I tried turning it upside down. I unplugged my Cuisinart SS700 Keurig and turned it upside down over the sink. Only a little tiny bit of water came out. Then I replugged it in and turned it on. There was a lot of gurgling and when I made a cup of coffee it worked as if it was brand new. We are into the second day and it is still working like new. I hope it lasts, but if not, I will try the upside down thing again. It looks as if there was air trapped in the line somewhere.

When I started getting the "half cups", I fixed this by closing the lid to make one puncture and then opening the lid, rotating the coffee pod and making a second puncture. This seems to have helped and now makes a full cup.

This is my second brewer (warranty return for same issue about 9 months ago) and just started getting half cups again - but this site provided a multitude of possible solutions. vinegar didn't work and didn't expect it to because always use filtered water. I ran the reservoir down to refill level then turned it upside down over the sink - heard a lot of bubbling noise and some spillage from the head. Put it right side up, filled it with water and Booom - started working just fine. I am guessing air in the line was the problem and probably the result of me refilling when its pulling in water from the reservoir when almost empty.

On my 3rd brewer now due to short-cupping. I de-scale, use distilled water, and clean the needles. There is no need for it to be short-cupping.

I've been using all the tricks I learned online, which work sometimes. When they don't, I call and have them send me a new brewer.

The Keurig representative told me on the phone that this is NOT a "known issue". I laughed and told her that I know she has to say that but it is all over the internet and they have a major problem with their brewers that they have to know about.

She then responded that since the complaints received for short-cupping are small in comparison to the amount of brewers that they sell (Which I don't believe judging by all the issues online), that they won't recall the product.

So I said, "then it is an issue that you know about"......and I heard crickets.

So I am on my third brewer in 2.5 years. Oh well, more money down the drain for them.

I am anxious to go home to try the upside-down solution, because I have tried everything else. I am on my third machine and one of my clients just told me that the machine I got for her office is doing it now - 4 months old.

Here's my observation: when I was descaling, I noticed that I didn't get a single partial fill. In fact whenever I run the machine without a pod there is NEVER an issue with partial fills. This leads me to conclude that the pod somehow affects the pressure adversely.

Anyone have an explanation for that? Could shed some light, since not everyone is having success with the upside-down trick.

I tried all those. Descaled machine. shook upside down, unplugged, unclooged with safety pin......none of those worked. Because of all the comments below I noticed that the water was flowing back into the water reservoir. So I now just keep my finger on the water valve (rubber thing on the left side of the machine that pulls the water from the reservoir) Finally, I am getting full cups.

ours is about 9 months old. Daily use (2-6 cups, both sizes). started "short-cupping" a few days ago. i unplugged, removed reservoir, held the coffee-maker upside down over sink and administered a couple of strong taps to the bottom of the machine. (before that step, i tried another tip below: held my finger over the rubber spout at the top of the reservoir for about 3 seconds -- that didn't work).

re-assembled, plugged in. worked perfectly for both size cups. i've only used bottled water in the machine; "de-scaled" it with vinegar, following the manual's directions, about a month ago when the descale light came on. i also leave my machine set on "auto-off".

got my fingers crossed as i sip a delicious cup of coffee; if it acts up again, i'll re-post. (by the way, some of your machines sound very expensive: i bought my on sale for $90 @ JC Penney.)

If you are having short cups (not enough water dispensed) it is most likely that the reservoir has air bubbles and that is what is stopping all the water from coming out. Just empty the reservoir and refill it (make sure there aren't any air bubbles in it) and put it back on, it should work now.

 One small thump, one large solution

Thanks for the comments on this site. Since the simplest solutions seem the be the first ones to try, I took of the reservoir lid and gave the machine a small rap with my knuckle when the water started to pour back into reservoir. The water stopped pouring out and I got a full cup. Thinking this was a fluke, I ran water for another cup and got a full cup without a thump. So far, so good.

In my comments on 2/5/11 I stated that I turned the Kuerig upside-down over the sink and my problem was solved. Sadly, it didn't last. I still believe it could be an air bubble in the water line that causes the problem but I don't feel like taking it to the sink and turning it upside down each time I want a cup of tea.

What is working for me now (and has been working consistantly for 3 weeks) is to take the cover off the reservoir and as soon as I see any water coming out of the spout and back into the reservoir I give the machine a thwack on the top and that stops the water from running back into the reservoir and allows me to have a perfectly full cup. I might try the suggestion below to hold my finger against the spout to avoid the need for thwacks on the poor machine but at least I know this works.

Apparently descaleing every three months isn't enough. They want me to do it every two. Seriously? Do these people not realize what a pain the tush this is? I'm really starting to resent Keurig and while I've been a HUGE supporter for years, I'm seriously contemplating going back to a 4-cup brewer. This is ridiculous. They are offering to replace my machine but why should I have to go through this every stinkin' year? Ugh. SO frustrating. Anyone have anything to say about the Breville or Cuisinart machines? Maybe that is a better option??

It does not provide a full cup if and when you press the lighted button for a large cup ... for the price of this unit and no longer having it I am somewhat disappointed in its performance ... maybe its time to move to one of their competitors. However, I have noticed that they are using the Keurig head on their machine other than Tassimo which mkts a complete different system. I recommend that Keurig get on the ball and figure out their problems. I will anxiously await Keurigs response to this issue. Thanks.

B70 model -Same problems as everyone yet the K cups for tea and hot chocolate work but not for coffee. Have tried all listed solutions twice. When brew a coffee cup it spits out a few drops of water then stops. Then it will only brew the largest of the settings in order to reset itself.
I have done all the vinegar and cleaning procedures,and upside down methods, blocking the air tube,etc etc and no luck for making coffee. Ideas anyone? Thanks. PS - love the irony when my word to enter my comments is TRIAGE. Who thinks these things up?

Did everything, finally emptied and flipped it over as above people did. Now vent doesnt spit a copule ounces back in res and im getting full cups again. sounds like a check pump solenoid/switch is getting stuck. Flipping it definately worked for me.

I've had my Keurig since December 2010 and the "partial cup" case
starting happening to my brewer as well! Just when I was about to torture my Keurig, I stopped to think about this "air bubble" problem and tried this. So far my troubles are gone!

1. Make sure you have water in the reservoir. Keep the cover off.
2. When the brewer is ready, press the button for fullest cup, then when your Keurig is about to pump the water from the reservoir, put your fingertip over the opening of the rubber spout (located where the water reservoir is with the cover off). Keep your finger there for just about 3 seconds, preventing air intake and then remove your finger).

You may have to do this one more time.

I hope this works for you all. It did for me and 3 other people I know who have the Keurig!

1) Print out this post and take it to Costco with your machine - file a complaint with Costco (paper card and staple print-out). Costco has enough buying power that with enough returns, they will do something.

2) Copy log (print to PDF) and write to Federal Trade Commission about False and Deceptive Advertising of this product - saying you can pick you cup size. http://www.ftc.gov/ftc/contact.shtm

3) Same to Consumer Product Safety Commission saying that after the first request for coffee under produces coffee, you re-request coffee and now it goes over the top causing hot coffee burns. Ask to have the product recalled:

Tried them all for the short cup. I use filtered water so descaling doesn't help, shaking, air, you name it, great coffee but a machine with lots of issues, maybe now that Starbucks might have k cups look for a fix or a quality machine.

I used the upside down method, now I am getting a right size cup brewing again. I did it just like others said upside down the maker few times. I did notice the second time, there was some water leak out from the spout which drips back to the reservoir tank.

Descaling warning that will not go away.

After drinking coffee that tastes like Vinegar, shaking the thing upside down, patting the back of it while trying to brew, unclogging not clogged holes with a paper clip I've come to a conclusion:

This thing's a POS. It ain't working, you might get a sorta full cup once in awhile.

That said it's worked for a couple of years but it's history.
Good luck...I fear that your fixes that have been mentioned willonly be temporary

I stocked up on K Cups and now sorry that I did. My Keurig only made partial cups from day one. The service rep asked me to descale because he thought the unit scaled up from the test they ran before shipping it out. After 2 gallons of white vinegar, I still have the same problem. Then I read the many things listed on forums and believe I tried them all (turn the unit upside down try and get the air out to checking overflow nozzles clear etc.) and still have a bad coffee maker. I really feel cheated - Keurig owes me time as well as money.

My son gave me the Keurig brewer for a X-mas present. After a few uses, I also get the 1/2 cup fill. Now the temperature is way to cool...NOT HAPPY! Sorry, he spent his hard earn money on an expense gift for me. I was going to take it back, but it seems like none of them work :(

With the number of complaints ... why is it that Keurig doesnt address its customers on the many issues of their machines and the 1/2 cup matter?

I have advised many of my friends and will also deal w/managers of the stores that sell this item. They best deal w/this situation ... remember that Cuisinart is a footprint of the Keurig which suggests that it is no better!!!

Get with it Keurig as it is only a matter of time before someone will resolve this ... other than yourselves.

I'm having the same problems as most. ONLY my reservoir back fills not from the soft plastic overflow - but from the fill drain in the bottom front of the reservoir. I take the top off and look down at the fill drain and I can actually see the hot water bubbling back up into the tank when it should be pumped into the cup. If you watch the water level on the side, you will watch it drain down about an inch and then when you press a cup size, you can watch as the level on the side of the tank creeps back up to about half of that amount and the other half goes in to the cup.
Looking into the tank, you can see a little spring loaded washer in the bottom of the drain. But when you fasten the tank securely onto the machine, the spring is pushed up and stays up. This allows the water to drain down, but it also allows the water to refill back into the tank when it should be pumping into your cup.

To the person who recommended that you give a hard tap to the top left of the brewer as the water starts to come out - a big THANK YOU! It worked! This is my 5th Keurig brewer. I've had this problem with all of them and the descaling does not work. I was just about to box it up at take it back to Costo.

My platinum brewer began making short cups for every size when it was very new. I saw water pouring out of the vent and back into the water chamber every time - that's where part of my water was going each time! But how do I stop that? Well, I did what people wrote below and it worked. I removed the water chamber, turned it off, unplugged it and took it over to the sink. I turned it upside down and gently shook it. Now it is working and it was very simple.

I don't know if it was the act of turning it on and off or the upside down & shaking but I agree with the theory of an air bubble needing to be dislodged. I realize now that at times I did not have the water chamber "hooked" into place tightly so maybe it did suck air into the water line. Now I will be more careful about putting the water chamber in correctly and if it brews short cups again, it is simple to repeat what I did today. Give it a try - if it's not a clogged needle or scaling on your pot maybe this will help yours too.

Finally a solution to this problem. I've been dealing with this short cup problem for the last six months. Many times I felt like whacking the thing, but kept my aggressions under control.

The firm whack to the top rear just before it pumps to the cup did the trick for me.

Keurig tech support will have you run a tanker truck of vinegar through...just give it a whack.

I have also discovered something that seems to have made a difference for the last 3 weeks or so. Waiting until the brewer makes sounds like it's going to start pumping the water through the K-cup, I then give the top center, towards the back, a sharp tap with an open palm. I think this may also dislodge the air block but timing is important, you have to wait until the brewer actually starts to try to pump water. Since I've been doing this, which I don't have to do every time, I haven't had to turn the thing upside down. So at least it's not quite as big of an inconvenience.

OK. I tried the vinegar solution over 20 times. It did not fix problem. However, I am noticing the reservior tip at the top of the water bin is leaking water into the reservior which means that water should be going into the coffee cup instead, which would fill cup up(or at least to the full setting).

This is not the technical solution but it works.
The rubber spout in the top rear of the reservoir
has two holes in it. The one in the front lets air in and the one in the back lets water out. Block the hole that lets the water flow out. And you get a full cup.

After one year of flawless use, the Keurig began brewing short cups. The solution? Took off the water canister, turned the machine upside down over the sink, shook it, took off the rubber "washer" that protects the spike/spout, ran the hot water tap directly on the spike/spout, poured white vinegar on the spike/spout, ran more hot water of the spike/spout to rinse off the vinegar. Cleaned and replaced the "washer," attempted to clean residue and oils off the area of the spike/spound with my finger,reassembled, tried it again.....the result? another (#%*#)$# half cup!? Got pissed off, unplugged to reset, replugged tried it again...it worked correctly! It has worked as designed for the past two mornings...no short cups since performing the above actions. How to fix half cups and water returning to water container while brewing.

Unplug unit, detached the water container, and turn unit upside down with a very gentle shake. Did the shake a couple of times to free up any air bubbles. Plugged back in, filled the water container and everything works fine.

Ditto...the machine is a week old and short cups. It works fine if you're willing to unplug and plug her back in for each use. We have a Keurig at our office...2 years of use and never a single issue at all. The new machines coming out of the factory are nothing more than junk...customer service won't help you. Save your money and don't buy this junk, you won't be happy with it!

If you call Keurig, you will get a live person almost immediately and they will connect you with their problem solvers. They told me to stick a paperclip into the 3 holes (not 1) in the upper spike about an inch in. Then run a cup of water through the machine without using a k cup. You will notice coffee grounds in the cup and the machine should work properly as mine did.

Keurig clearly knows there's an issue and has done nothing about it! I've been through numerous machines, all which default back to "half-cupping"!

These clowns now have Cuisinart and Breville on board with the same junk (under privatel label), dont go there!!!

You can either have Keurig replace the machine frequently or cut your losses and go back to cheaper, better yet less convenient brewing.

I live in a Florida town with ridiculously hard water. There are eight limerock mines within 5 miles of my house for a reason, and I'm used to dealing with the build-up of calcium scale in my appliances.

I started getting the half cups about 6 months after using the Keurig. The PREVENTATIVE cleaning instructions call for running vinegar through the system for 4 cycles. That may be sufficient for regular maintenance, but once you're getting half-cups you're going to have to work a bit harder to dissolve that calcium. Most white vinegars have only 5% acidity (pH 2.4), so you'd actually be better off running pure lemon juice (pH 2.2) through it.

It took me a while to dissolve the crud, but now it's making full cups again.

Here's what I did:

1) Run 15 cups of vinegar through it, pouring the vinegar in the cup back into the reservoir each time
2) Wait 30 minutes
3) Run another 15 cups through it.

What "should" happen (with the largest cup size) is:

1) Run cup #1
2) The pump draws up 1/2 of cup #2 from the reservoir immediately after the cup #1 finishes pouring
2) When cup #2 is started, the pump draws the other 1/2 of cup #2 and starts pouring
3) No water should flow back into the reservoir from the flexible overflow spout during the pouring of cup #2

If this isn't what you're seeing, keep running vinegar the same vinegar back through it. Vinegar will dissolve the calcium, but it takes time.

I've now had my Keurig B40 working great for now the 3rd year in a row. All this time the machine has worked flawless. I would run various cleaning cycles often as the Keurig site suggested and many times would do a full cleaning. Only now, this past week I am getting Half cup portions no matter what setting I use.
Sometimes I wonder what other people were doing wrong and my machine must of been of the better models out there. I treat my Keurig with great care and it has lasted.

I suppose I will follow the De-scaling method as mentioned and go over the machine with a fine tooth approach.

I got a bendable drink straw placed it on the
nub where the water comes out and sucked. Make sure the coffee maker is cold. I got a mouth full of water and my coffee maker made a full cup of coffee.

WOW!!!! I thought it was just my husband who was having all the same problems.Full cups are no filling all the way, now we have grains showing up in the coffee cup. Yes, we did the same thing, cleaned it out with Vinegar, stuck paper clip to unclog it and drained it. I'm so happy I was able to find this site. This product was poorly made. My husband has had this machine for about 6 months just like most of you. Wow, I almost bought him another for a Christmas present. After reading these posting, there is no way, I'm spending more money.

I've had my brewer for 11 months but had problems after the first month with 1/2 cups and inconsistent brews. My initial thought was the machine had an air lock. I contacted customer service 3 times, went through the paper clip, descale, etc and had inconsistent results. Sometimes the brewer works great, other times it seems to have inconsistent results for a couple weeks, then it's fine again for a few weeks. No rhyme or reason. I noticed a previous post suggesting turning machine upside down and shaking to remove the air. I've tried it and was able to actually hear the air bubble exit. This seems to fit my original thought and will try it a few more times when needed but it would seem to be a simple issue to engineer a brewer like this that could eliminate air locks. Keurig designers ??? How about fixing the design flaw and offering discounts to all registered owners on the new, improved model?
The brewer is a great idea but needed thorough engineering and testing before sending it to prime time.
I never had to turn my Mr. Coffee upside down.

I'm going on my 3rd machine in less than 2 years! The first one just stopped pumping. Keurig replaced it. The second one started short cupping in 9 mos. They kept me on the phone for 1/2 hour having me take it apart, run bent paperclips through the needles, remove the reservoir and shake it...then told me to descale and call them back if that didn't work. Well it didn't, so now they're sending yet another machine. I told the customer service reps that you can buy a Mr Coffee for $12.99 and it works for 5 years and these Keurig machines cost almost $200 and they suck.

My Keurig B31 had the same problem after only a month. I have another one for my 90 year old Mom's Christmas present. Now I'm not sure she will be able to turn the thing upside down every time it stops brewing. It took me 2 times before it would work again. I think when they glue the thing together, they don't get all the plastic pieces or glue pieces out. I use bottled water so it's not a descaling thing at all.

I too had the same problems everyone is talking about. EVERY ONE of them. I used a gallon of distilled white vinegar - changed the cup size a couple of times, unplugged the machine and removed the resevoir a few times, it is working now. I've had this machine about 6 months and we use it every day, several times a day. I'll post back when it messes up again, but from now on, if it still works, I'm descaling it once a month.

I was getting a constant flow back into the resivoir and short cups. Unplugged it, removed the resevoir and the tray, turned it upside down over the sink and gave it a few shakes. Had to do this twice, but now it's back to normal.

thank you kris for the explanation. my machine worked properly for two days......until I let it run out of water. after this the machine started half cupping. I didn't realize what the problem was and I was getting pretty pissed off having paid 115$. finally after reading kriss post I unplugged and COMPLETELY emptied the machine. it takes some time because od the resovoir that is in the machine play with it and you can figure out how. do this and refill the machine and never never never let it ru. out of water and you'll be set. pretty crappy design and will definitely be e last keurig product I EVER buy. it should be able to run out of water while brewing and once you realize and add water fix the problem. I saw that it was made in china, maybe north Korea teamed up with its ally china to initiate world war three by screwing us out of our coffee!!!!

 Poorest Quality for an Expensive Brewer

Very glad I found this page. For anyone considering the Keurig, you are in for an enormous disappointment. In the past 3 months I have gone through 2 brewers, my latest is the elite which retails for nearly $150. I live alone so the machine gets minimal use. The first machine lasted for 10 days and then pulled all kinds of stunts with the exception of actually brewing a cup of coffee. It constantly blew the pods apart and spit grounds everywhere. Tallying up the pod destruction was a $25 loss. Pod clean up is messy, but I dealt with it and was careful to check all the needles for blockage, but there wasn't any. I returned it after 2 weeks of use and, since the store was out of stock, I ordered a more expensive model online. After 2 weeks out of the box I had to descale the new one. One week later, the machine does not function without lots of power-disconnects, mild shaking, removing and reattaching the reservoir... it's ridiculous. After reading the posts here I can see that I'll enjoy dealing with 'customer disservice.' BOTTOM LINE: If you want an overpriced piece of worthless sh*t, this it the brewer for you!

we had the same problem; all of a sudden, getting 1/2 sized cups. descaled twice, turned off and on again, cleaned exit needle to no avail. noticed water spewing back into water container from the top of the machine (reservoir?) with each brew cycle. figured there may be some sort of air lock..unplugged unit, detached the water container, and turned unit upside down with a very gentle shake. unit is working properly now, with no backflow from reservoir.

Were this a car, a class action would be the inevitable result of foisting a defective product on the market. Although the Keurig started out to be my favorite coffee maker of all time, that title has been stripped away since after only 6 months of owning the machine I cannot get a full cup of coffee to brew. There is no good solution, cleaning does nothing, so you either brew two cups with the same K-cup(which always tastes weak and get grounds in it when I try it) or pay double as much money to use two K-cups. I refuse to take the lid off and pinch the return water spout because that is just ghetto. A $150 machine (on sale!) should work longer than 6 months and not require some sort of rigging to work. So, I'm digging out the old Krups and making it the old fashioned way again. Besides I'm tired of Green Mountain and the Donut Shop. Keurig= coffee maker FAIL

After reading all of the posts here, it seemed to me the problem was the water being released back into the reservoir. Sure enough, I allowed the machine to function normally until it was time for the water to pour into the cup then just as the water was returning to the reservoir I held the spout closed with my finger and it worked fine. Unfortunately having to stand by as your coffee brews may be a pain to some.

The other option is to brew one large cup and one small cup, as the problem is that half the water is being returned to the reservoir. This solution makes for a stronger brew, however.

I personally like a stronger brewed cup of coffee so I'll likely use the later option.

I personally like both these options over cleaning that does no good, calling for support that seems to get no results or having a new machine which will only have the same problem 2 months from delivery.

Got the Platinum Brewer from QVC. Worked perfectly for about 2 months,then started turning off after each cup and water amount not correct. I read every single thing in the instructions,cleaned it,de-scaled it. Nothing. Now QVC will NOT replace it,saying they do not have this item anymore. After reading many reviews,this one is going back and I don't want another one. Great idea,but back to the drawing board. And much too expensive an item to replace constantly.

 Short Cup Fix That Works For Me

I've had my unit for about a year and I use it to brew one large (12 ounce)cup per day. About 4 months ago, it started short cupping (maybe every third or fourth cup I made). The fix that has worked FLAWLESSLY for me for the last two months is to make sure that I remove the water reservoir and fill it to the VERY TOP, before EVERY cup of coffee I make. In the two months that I've been trying this, I haven't had a single short cup. I think the added water pressure due to the reservoir always being totally full is enough to ensure that the full 12 ounces gets withdrawn from the reservoir for each cup. Additionally, I always wait until the unit is TOTALLY done brewing before turning it off (don't know if this makes a difference or not but it can't hurt). Hope this helps someone else with this problem.

I see ALOT of you have the "short cup" problem. My first mini-brewer stopped working all together, so since it was out of warranty, I tossed it out and I moved up to the "Elite". After 6 months... it's "short-cupping" (as their rep calls it). Obviously a common problem with these units or they wouldn't have a nick-name for it. Too bad - otherwise they work well. I make 2 short cups like the other people on this blog. I would pay double the price, if they'd make a better unit... maybe more metal components, less plastic ?

I love the coffee from this machine when it works. It was a gift from my 11 year old daughter and she was very proud she saved the money to buy it for me. I cannot find the pattern to why this happens. I travel frequently and unplug it while I am away. When I return it is like it has a mind of its own. After about a week the cup sizes get better but not full cups anymore ever. Anyone have any solution that works?

We had a Keurig B60 Brewer that we bought over 3 years ago... it worked GREAT!!! The motor seemed to be going and making louder noises than usual. Then one day it wouldn't brew any coffee. So we went and bought a new one. We had that one for about 2 months before it started brewing 1/2 cups! I descaled and cleaned the needle 3 times - once while on the phone with customer service. They said something isn't right, so they sent us a new one. We were very excited to get this one and have it work correctly! But after about 2 months again... this one started doing the same thing. There is something wrong with the Vent... it pours water back out into the water reservior when it should be using all of it to brew the coffee. Anyway... I called customer service again, they sent us a new one. So we will see what happens with this one. We LOVE this coffee maker because it is so easy to use... but it is extremely frustrating that it works correctly for a while and then it doesn't.

Loved the Keurig. Toldm ydaighter it is the best gift I have ever recieved. But after a couple of months now all the cups are short. Clearly a product defect.

Good Lord! I received my first Keurig B70 in October 2009. Two months later it began to brew half-cup sizes. Shortly thereafter it stopped brewing altogether. I should mention during the two months I had it I only brewed three cups a week. I bought a second one in December 2009 and by March 2010 it was not working either. I foolishly purchased a third a few weeks ago, thinking that perhaps the issue was our well water. Despite using bottled water this one has also stopped working. After only two weeks and brewing five cups! What garbage! Expensive garbage too.

My husband and kids bought me this coffee maker for Mother's Day. I tried it out that night and noticed that it only brewed a half cup on the medium sized mug setting. I figured that was just the size of it. (And thought it would be kinda nice too, since I add cream to my coffees) This morning, I tried out the biggest setting and got the same amount. I tried everything listed here and in the manual and I'm already frustrated. I'd wanted one of these for so long and now I've had it for 3 days and it's already disappointed me :(

 Loved my Platinum B70 when it worked!

I had my Platinum B70 Keurig Brewer for 11 months & loved it and then it wouldn't work at all!! I called the company and we went through a few steps to get it working and no luck so they are sending me a new one! They were very nice but, they are on back order!!! My daughter is on her 3rd Keurig Brewing since Dec. 2009!!! Something is very wrong!! I don't know how to rate this product but,when it worked I would give it a 5 star!

 Only getting half cup

I am having the same issue with getting half cups. It does the same using the universal holder as well. This tells me that there is an issue with this product. I am betting that Keurig knows about it and arnt going to resolve the issue. Nice company.

 Half cups

I have a Keurig B40 model and my problem is that it half fills the cup and the other half of the water is going back into the reservoir.
I located and cleaned the exit needle and it worked for about 3 days and then proceeded to do the same thing. I am waiting for a reply from customer service to see what they suggest. The machine is only 3 months old.
After reading some of the comments I will make sure that I am letting it cycle through completely before shutting it off.

 1/2 brewing cups

I love my Keurig coffee maker, or at least I did. My first one began brewing half cups so I called customer service. They ran me through several steps to clean the needles but nothing worked. I love the fact of being able to brew one cup at a time, but I'm beginning to give up on it.

It's hard to rate this coffee maker because mine worked beautifully for about 1 year. Then it started brewing partial cups. Seems the water would not "intake" into the machine, and water would just "dribble" out. Keurig just sent me another machine, so we'll see how long this one works. If I can get another year out of this one, I guess I'll be happy. It sure seems a coffee maker should last about 5 years, though.

I also have purchased a unit that constantly only brews 1/2 cup at a time or overflows another. There is no consistancy or warning if it will brew to much or not enough. The concept is great, though expensive; but extremely expensive when it hardly ever works correctly.

 Underbrewing Water Keurig

Hi,

I have the Keurig machine, and wanted to advise you that it is not a descaling problem.

Customer service should not have told you this. What happens is if you push a button for example:

If you press the largest Cup, and you stop the machine because of any reason the next cup will only fill what is left over from the previous cup. Let the coffee machine brew this amount.

Then, just lift the lid where you originally place the coffee pod, and push the appropriate size button for your cup. You will already have some coffee from the previous brew, so you will most likely need to push the medium size cup.

On another note if you add water to the reservoir while you are brewing it may stop the cycle.

My granddaughters stopped their cycles because they thought the coffee would overflow. I simply took another cup and let the remainder brew.

 B60 Short cupping

I have the same problem with a brand new B60. It does not brew the correct amount and customer service also told me to clean and descale the brand new machine. The very next morning it still short cups. It is going back.
