I Dislike My Keurig B40 Coffee Maker

by PL
(WI)

I dislike my Keurig B40 coffee maker and regret the purchase - I don't have much complaint with the performance of the machine itself, but more with the K-cups.

The K-cups are poor, poor, quality. I'm tired of my cup filling up with grounds and K-cups "exploding" (okay, more like a pop than an explosion) and clogging up the machine with grounds. Probably about 10% of the K-cups we've purchased in the past few years have been defective.

We even took to 'candling'them - using a flashlight to see it there were excessive grounds. A hassle, but effective in avoiding a mess - but still a lot of waste. For a while, the Caribou brand cups seemed reliable, but the last severable boxes we've had were all but unusable. And, since they are dark, we can't even use the flashlight method.

We tried the fill-your-own, but if you put in just a bit too much or it is packed a bit too tightly it becomes a problem.

All in all, it has become way too much of a hassle to use the thing and a big waste of money for all the K-cups that are unusable.

Keurig knows of problems! NEW
by: Paul

People:

I bought a Keurig B40 from a Lowes store in Massachusetts. This was in early December 2011. Within a short time frame, I began to experience issues diagnosed as Failure To Prime. The unit was replaced by the end of December 2011. The new unit has now failed with the same symptoms, only a few weeks after receipt. Again the unit is being replaced and the customer service representative would not comment on the total number of issues.

If you want to be a good consumer, then you MUST be an advocate. I am calling the company to task on this issue. Its principle place of business is in The Commonweath of Massachusetts. I'll include my letter for your reference. This is either a design defect or a manufacturer's defect. Because this issue effects virtually every unit, it is more than likely a design defect. A recall of all would cost a fortune!

RE: Elite Brewers

Dear Sir or Madam:

I purchased an Elite brewer at Lowes, Plainville, MA, on or about 12/04/2011. Within the month, the item failed. I contacted customer service and it was determined that the unit was experiencing a “failure to prime” and steps were taken to reset the appliance. This issue recurred and, consequently, it was replaced under warranty provisions.

As of today, the replacement unit (same model) has exhibited the same symptoms and a new unit will be sent:

Order Number: H004828344

I inquired about upgrading to another model and expressed my willingness to pay the difference. However, the customer service representative stated that Keurig does not have an upgrade policy.

It is quite clear that the Elite model has either a design defect or a manufacturing defect based upon the evidence. In my experience, two units of the same model from two different sources, failed in the same fashion. It is more than a mere coincidence that both units failed in the same manner within the same time frame. Of course, Keurig, Inc. will not make an admission because it would open the floodgates.

Now, I am asking to make an exception to your upgrade policy. I would like you to suggest a brewer that does not have a repair history, offer it to me, and I will pay the difference in cost. If this is not suitable, then anticipate receiving a consumer demand letter under the provision of M.G.L. c.93A, Section 9, seeking treble damages, fees, and costs. I trust that you will make a prudent decision.

So light a fire under the corporations feet.

My machine is going strong, filtered water only, no tea or hot chocolate. On average week day anywhere from 8 to 10 large sups. Weekend and can be double. I love the Coffee from it and so do my Friends and Family. Timothy's is one of my fav suppliers. One of the Hotels I stay at has a Machine in the Club Lounge.

I have had one Hiccup when my in-laws were visiting, I think Mother in-law was using tap water and it took a few rounds of de-scaling but every since it has been working great.

just spoke with Keurig
by: Anonymous

I just had the exploding k-cups happen to me twice. I have a Mr.Coffee machine. I tried calling Mr.Coffee, but the automated answer thingy kept hanging up on me. I then called Keurig. Their customer service was wonderful. Explaining to me that it is the k-cup and not the brewer. Said that if you look at the top of the cup and it is bulging slightly it is from a build up of nitrogen. They said when putting the k-cup into the machine, push down on the k-cup to pre-puncture the k-cup before closing the lid. It will release the nitrogen through the bottom needle and there won't be an explosion. I will try that from now on. I was thoroughly impressed with their help. He said that they don't handle any problems with the Mr. Coffee machine, but it was definitely a problem with the k-cup itself.

Tip for exploding K-Kups....
by: Anonymous

I have found that pre-sealing your kcups (and this works great for my-kcap folks as well) with glad press-n-seal helps with exploding k-cups.

Guess we're fortunate our coffee maker lasted nearly 2 years. Are there any good comments about these machines? Can't believe all the problems. I'm from the "old school" expect things to last longer than these machines. I 'descaled" our coffee maker every few months as suggested and never had the descale light come on until last week... two days after a descaling. Then it started "short cupping" and the pump became much more quiet. Descaled again..twice. Called Keruig. Nice gal on line said I'd get a call back in 24/48 hrs. Meantime, bought a new Mr Coffee. We've had these type of pots for years. About 80 hours later received a call back. Nice young man went through all the things I had already done.. was told to "descale" over night and call back. I suggested the pump was gone, was told no, it would not be the pump.. Guess what? The B40 has not put out any liquid since. It's in the trash right now. Don't want another one of these machines. Can't believe the people who have gone through several!!! Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Goodby, Keurig. Does anyone from the Keurig company read these comments? I don't think so.

B40 cup runneth under
by: Anonymous

As I type, I am waiting for my 4th b40 from Keurig. This time #3 only lasted 3 weeks. I have to mail the unit back. It will not brew 9.25 ounces for a lg cup. Same problem as all the others. If they were not replacing these units, I would never spend money on one, EVER.

B40 failed again
by: David S

We have had 2 units and both started making 1/2 cups of coffee. sometimes it works fine, sometimes not. Called and was offered a discount on a new unit. They stand behind their product, just way back so you can't see them. got a year and maybe 200 cups out of this unit before it acted up. Gee, Mr Coffee lasted 15 years and hundreds of pots of coffee. Maybe the $19 unit was a better buy than the $109 one. it might be cheaper to brew a whole pot of coffee, have 1 cup and pour the rest down the drain.

LOUD & NOISY
by: Dave

My B40 DOESE makes great coffee.
Got for a gift with one box of K-cups. When (K-cups) were gone, never bought any more. Too expensive and too weak to make a normal size cup of coffee and did not care for flavor or selections.
Needed to use TWO K-CUPS to MAKE ONE MUG.
I Use bagged coffee or grind my own from whole beans with plastic holder with brass screen.
Again, makes GREAT COFFEE.

THERE ARE TWO PROBLEMS:
1. Buttons are sticking.
When pushed, they stick inside machine. t's only a matter of time (I guess) when they won't popp back out.
When that happens I'm done with Keurig.

2.NOISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I get up an hour earlier than my wife UNTILL I MAKE COFFEE. It's so loud it wakes her up.
In the summer with windows open, my neighbor hears the KEURIG from HIS HOUSE 40-50 feet away from mine.
I can not understand why this thing has to be so noisy?

bummer
by: Anonymous

Oh yeah..we love em..but the first thing went wrong was the coffee gets stuck in the little needle thingy...so if you take a pin..you can get it loose..then i ran vinegar through to clean it all out.soooooo...not too bad..

then thought the thing stopped working...lights went off and on, for abit..then total nothing.

so i played with it abit..ticked off..finally wrapped it up and give up..

i know have gone back to my regular drip coffee maker..bummer bummer bummer..what a tease

Very Disappointed in my B40
by: Anonymous

I just purchased my B40 a week ago today. It had problems out of box. I kept hope that the problem would fix itself or go away. I primed it perfectly. It brewed the first 2 cups with No problem, after that, it heats up then will not brew. I lift the handle and retart more than a dozen times to reset and try to brew again. I actually unplugged it and plugged it in again...what do ya know it worked. these machines have a mind of their own. Sorry, but I shouldn't have to go through all sorts of fix its to brew a cup of coffee. (One of the reasons I got this coffee maker was the supposed fast brew, ease of use and not wasting coffee making a full pot, not to mention no clean-up.) Nothing works, its a shame that Keurig knows these machines have an ongoing problem and still have not fixed it!! They should be ashamed of themselves. All they do is keep replacing machines!! Its rediculous!! I'd love to know whow many they have replaced to date. I'm regretfully returning my machine for a refund to the store I bought it at. NOT Keurig!! Too Bad, because I love the machine when it does work!!

super duper but a bit of a pooper
by: lisa

I gave four stars because we have enjoyed ours for almost two years before the pump died. We enjoyed everything about the coffee and the machine. We should get some sort of commission since almost everyone we know bought one after experiencing ours. We had no idea of the problem until ours went out - we are planning on purchasing the Cuisinart version - they have a good reputation for quality products and a three year warranty!

They are junk
by: Anonymous

After mine went out (pumps out 2tbls of coffee and quits) I started researching online and discovered so many people going through 4 or 5 units before giving up on them. Same problem, the pumps don't last and Keurig won't fix them. Buy anything else! Even the positive raters seem to be in a minority and if you exclude the raters who rate after owning for less than 2 months, the positives drop to almost nill. Chinese parts = no Quality Control. Odds are against you!

Keurig B40 is Junk
by: Anonymous

It is Monday, June 7th and we have three, count them, (3) Keurig coffee makers sitting in my basement that have quit working. They are JUNK!
I received a B40 for Christmas (09)from my three daughters. It lasted about 4 weeks and started doing strange things like just shutting off, not heating, then it just died. Like to never have gotten Keurig to call me back. I finally got someone to call me back and they sent us a new one. Guess what? The pump went out on it after about 6 weeks. It would just run and run, then quit. Got hold of someone at Keurig quicker this time and they sent us another one. This one worked 7 weeks then it just stopped. Keurig has promised another replacement AGAIN. Hopefully I will finally get one that works for more than a few weeks. Once I am out of warranty, I'll never buy another one of these pieces of junk. By the way, Keurig's BBB rating is "F". Surprise Surprise!

I luv my Keurig B40 & so do all my neighbors!
by: Sandy

Maybe you rec'd. a defective machine and Keurig will replace. I've not had the problems you're having. Have you tried "Timothy's", "Coffee People's", "Gloria's" or "Green Mountian"? Those are the main Kcups that I use and haven't had but one or two cups of coffee that had grounds in them. I sure hope you work out your problem w/your
Keurig, as any who uses mine says they're "getting
one for Christmas!" Good luck & God bless!
