Hamilton Beach stay and go coffee maker

by Alice
( Idaho)

I have a Hamilton Beach “stay and go” coffee maker. Although my exact model does not appear to be available any more, a similar model still exists.

The coffee maker comes with an insulated carafe that keeps the coffee hot. The coffee maker does not have a heated element on which the coffee pot sits. This is supposed to be safer as there is nothing to remember to turn off after the coffee is gone. However, if the top on the carafe is not closed tightly after pouring a cup of coffee, it will cool down faster than you want.

The machine also comes with two travel cups. Either the travel cups can be filled or the coffee pot. The machine is programmable which is very convenient, allowing one to wake up to a fresh pot of coffee already made.

My coffee maker came with some sort of a water filter that I never use. Not sure if it is a plus or not. It also is supposed to make 8 cups of coffee, but in reality holds just 5 ½ cups of water. I suppose if you figure a cup is really ¾ of a cup, then the advertising is about right.

The coffee filter is the deep V type which concentrates the coffee providing a stronger, bolder tasting coffee. These appear to work just fine.

Finally, the coffee maker is easy to clean with vinegar and water. The cups are easily washed by hand. The carafe must be handled with care however as it is insulated. My husband broke the glass on the original one that came with our coffee maker. Receiving a replacement part was quick and easy although we did have to pay!

fire hazzard!

I bought this one from the Canadian Super Store. I had it for about 3 months, the steam would build up from the top and in no time the on light no longer lit up. Now after coffee is made and the machine has shut off, I will go back a while later and the machine is gurgling because there is no water and it has turned itself on. The other problem is the travel cups, they don't have a good seal so the layer between gets water in, when you drink your coffee the water comes back out on you.
I am very disappointed in it but of course I can't find my receipt.
I think I will go back to a french press, less to go wrong!
