First problem ever!

by Karin
(Suffolk NY)

For the first time, I am having a problem with my Keurig. Not enough water is filtering through for a full cup of coffee. Any suggestions?

High Altitude
by: Joe

If you live in Colorado, at high altitude, like we do, this is what we were told by Bed, Bath and Beyond, where we purchased all of our Keurig K-cup brewers. Push the K-cup down onto the bottom needle first, before closing the brewing chamber, this will prevent coffee grinds from back-flowing up into the top needle, and cloging it. This is due to a higher internal pressure within the K-cup from a higher altitude.

CLR Works Saves Time and Money
by: Charles Wagner

I tried to descale with white vinegar after I started getting "short cups". It worked a couple times. The next problem was hot water pumping into the reservoir rather than the cup. Vinegar will not help. I went to the local hardware store, bought CRL calcium, rust and lime remover. I put 6 large coffee cups full of cold water in the reservoir and a large coffee cup full of CRL in with it, mixed with a spoon, and hit brew. Nothing great happened for the fist couple of cycles. I tried again in ten minutes, and got a half cup of hot water/CRL mix with mineral deposits that sank to the bottom. Each cup after that showed improvement. less water going into the reservoir and more into the cup. By the fifth cup, no water was going into the reservoir and I was getting full cups. I kept recycling the top half of each hot cup of water CRL back into the reservoir to get use of its cleaning power. The problem was not deposits in the heating chamber or the nozzle on my Keurig, it was deposits in an internal check valve, that was allowing the pressurized water to follow the path of least resistance, (the reservoir) Once the deposits were cleared by the CLR the check valve functioned as it should and now my Keurig is like new. You will have to brew 3 tanks of clean water after running the CRL out, and rinsing the fresh water reservoir. CRL is strong, but 3 refills of fresh water brewed out any that remained. My coffee tastes great and I am one happy camper. CRL cost me 7 dollars and I used a third to half of a bottle to do this project. It took no tools, just some time. I hope this works for you. I am confident it will. Charles Wagner Tonawanda N.Y.

fixed (fingers crossed)
by: Anonymous

Thanks to a video on YouTube ("easy fix for your keurig coffee maker"), I believe I have solved my problems. The unit would turn off after making a cup; and it only made about 5 oz no matter which size I chose. Take off the water tank and see how much sediment is sitting where the water gets pulled into the machine. I also used a paper clip through the needle slit (as mentioned earlier).

Partial cup
by: RayK

Our Keurig was giving partial cups when we bought the handy (expensive) K-cups (clogged piercing needle?). When we switched to loading our favorite Columbian (cheap WalMart brand) into the re-usable My K-Cup, the problem went away. My wife de-scales with white vinegar, but the de-scale warning light comes on again within 2 weeks. We might try CLR instead.

Keurig stopped making full cups
by: Mike C

When our Keurig stopped making full cups, I followed directions above, especially the paper clip in the k-cup piercer. (Thanks to all contributors). In addition, I removed the reservoir and used a cotton swab to clean out the water drain adjacent to the blue water fill light. Although we always use filtered water for our coffee, I was surprised to see the amount of wet "lint-like" material that I swabbed out of there. I then ran vinegar through. The unit began to behave exactly like it did when we bought it.

Short Cup
by: Anonymous

I have had my Keurig for a couple of years now. Every so often we have problems with a short cup. I think it is the pods. I base this on the fact that the type my husband was using was short cupping in him and I would put mine through both before and after and get full cups every time. We use ours everyday 3 people and two thermos fillings. Can't ask for a better machine. Also, we have the hardest water you can imagine and I haven't ever put bottled water through mine. Love it and when it dies will be buying another.

Brewing partial Cups and leaking water out of reservoir spout
by: Merphygirl

I have been having the partial cup problem for a few months now. Early on, it would function right if I unplugged the whole unit and replugged, thus reseting the unit. However, it only doing partial cups now and dripping water into the water reservoir at the top during the brew cycle. I tried the paper clip to see if it was coffe grounds in the needle: it was not. Then I thought there could be extra water in the brewer causing it to leak out the spout at the top of the reservoir. I unplugged the unit, turned it upside down, and only a small amount of water leaked out, but there seemed to be a vacuum released when the lid opened as I was draining the unit of all water. After that we are back in business. I don't know for how long, but could a vacuum in the unit be causing the water to divert to the reservoir spout? Only time will tell.

Short Cups- me too
by: Denise

My brewer is about 9 months old. It started giving short cups a few months ago buy only on occastion. Now it does it all the time. We have to brew twice to get a cup of coffee.

I called customer service, went through their recommended steps to open the needle with the paperclip. Then did the descaling process. Still not working properly.

Next step, calling again trying to get help, or better yet, a new coffee maker. This seems to be a common problem. They should have resolved it by now.

6th Brewer!
by: Anonymous

I purchased my first Keurig Special Edition brewer in October of 09. I didn't use filtered water or a filter in the brewer. Within just a month my brewer was "short cupping". I called and customer service would not help me because my brewer was more than a month old and everyone that could help me goes home before I get off work. For everyone who has had good customer service from them, I have NOT! I called 3 times but there was never anyone that could help me and leaving my number for them to call back didn't work either, they never called. So I have just been taking my machines back to Kohls where I purchased them every time they stop working. They will "short cup" me for a while, then they will just stop pumping water. I've done everything, the paper clip, the descale. Now I use ONLY filtered water and I bought a filter for the water reservior, this current machine has been working for about 3 months but it still "short cups" me almost every day. The one I have now is my 6th Keurig and if I didn't love it so much I would have given up way before now! If someone has a fix for this please let us all know!

Keurig Special Edition
by: Pam

I am having a problem with my Keurig Special Edition. I have had it less than a year and it is making a terrible sound when I start it up and then water runs out over the counter while it is also running into the cup. I keep getting less and less water in my cup. I unplugged it, got a flash light and started poking around where the water comes out with a straight paper clip. I refilled the reservoir and now it seems to be "ok" but I don't know for how long.

Answer to Nacy re registering by mail

Answer to Nancy. Most states have some kind of law that frees you from having to send in a warranty card. You must, of course, have the receipt showing the date of purchase

Not brewing whole cup/shuts off
by: Anonymous

I am having the same problem with my Keurig! It worked fine for a couple of months, then suddenly it started only brewing a partial cup of coffee. Followed the instructions for descaling and for cleaning the needles, etc. These did not fix my problem. I hear the vent dropping water into the resevoir the entire time as well. Now it has started automatically shutting off after brewing one cup. Auto shut off is not turned on. I am at a loss as to what could be causing all of these. We also missed the window for registration. Not sure if we will be able to get replacement.

RE: First problem ever!
by: Sarge

I had the same problem. I found the solution on a youtube video.

Every once in a while, coffee grounds get jammed in the upper needle and will prevent water flow to the top of the pierced k-cup.

You made need a flash light to see it, but the upper needle has a slit in the side. Simply take a straightened paper clip and slide it up into the needle a few times to loosen the trapped grounds. Run straight hot water through it to test.

GREATEST

I have had my Keurig coffee maker for over 3 years and NEVER had a problem. My mother, daughter-in-law have one and my brother actually has one in each of his homes. I think this coffee maker is the greatest thing since sliced bread!

by: Anonymous

I have had my brewer for five months...it has always been pretty good...then a few days ago...it started acting up...I called their customer service line...they were excellent and the girl I spoke to told me to take the whole thing apart and try again, pushing on the water resivoir...it worked! Only for another day tho...so I called again; they are sending me a new Keurig with two free cases of coffee...their customer service was awesome, but after reading all these conerns, I am nervous. I really like the coffee and the convienience of the Keurig, but I hope my problems are done!

I am on my third one!!!
by: Anonymous

This is a nice coffee maker, the problem is it only last forabout one week than I call and they send me another one. It either gives me /2 cup or does not heat a new one at all. Thereb seems to be a problem with the water getting to the pump. Now that I have three I am going to take one apart

running slowly
by: Anonymous

My unit started working very slowly this morning, I tried several things, removing the k-cup and just running water thru it. Then, while it was running slowly, I lifted the reservoir and all pf a sudden, it spurted out coffee grounds and went back to normal.

I wonder if the upper needle was partially plugged, or if it needed priming and that just washed it out.

I'll see if it happens again.

Call Keurig
by: Ace

Never solved my problem of partial cups. Called the Keurig people and they sent me a brand new replacement brewer at no cost. They even sent the variety pack of K-cups. Very friendly people and fantastic customer satisfaction. They did suggest descaling the brewer every 3 months as per the instructions that came with the brewer. They also said that after brewing a hot cocoa you should immediately run a clear water cycle through to clean the needles. Received my new brewer 10 days after calling them. Great people!

Brewing Partial Cups
by: Cheryl

My Keurig is intermittently brewing partial cups. I have cleaned the exit needle and the K cup holder. I've even de-scaled it even though I've had it maybe a month. I just read somewhere else that somebody was having the same problem and corrected it by removing the water reservoir to fill it rather than adding to the reservoir while attached to the machine. I have no clue why/if that will work, but I'm going to try it tomorrow morning and I'll let you know. :-)

not enough water
by: Ace

Same problem ... started last week. Only getting about 1/2 cup. Was going to try running vinegar or CLR thru it but it sounds like that won't work. Has anyone found a solution yet?

Same here!
by: nancy

Just started this morning! I'm furious! We just bought this in July 09 and we went on vacation right after we purchased it so we missed out on the "10 day" (absurd) window to register it. I'm assuming the worst when I call to complain today, with them telling me there is nothing they can do since we didn't send in the warranty info.
