A Brief History of Cuisinart

In 1971 Carl and Shirley Sontheimer sat in on a demonstration of a food preparation machine for restaurateurs in the country of France. They were so impressed by the technology that they wanted to use it in appliances for homes in the U.S.A. Upon returning to the states, Carl Sontheimer jumped into the home appliance business with a company called Cuisinart.

As a retired physicist and a talented cook, Carl began by tinkering with the prototype of the food preparation machine they had observed in France. He refined and remade it according to industry standards in the U.S. In 1973, the Sontheimers produced the first “Food Processor” and it was unveiled at the National Housewares Exposition in Chicago.

By 1975, the Food Processor began receiving praise from various well-known cooks and it was featured in magazines such as the Gourmet and the New York Times. By 1977, not only did Cuisinart’s food processor business take off but many other appliance makers entered the food processor market selling over 30 models of processors.

In 1989, Cuisinart became a holding of the Conair Corporation and by 1994 the company was producing large and small food processors, cookware, blenders and coffee makers.

In 2001, Cuisinart expanded and improved its line of coffee makers by introducing the Premier Series Coffee Makers. The high performance features of Cuisinart remained but the technology was greatly improved giving the world a better line of Coffee Makers from Cuisinart.
