B&D Spacesaver SDC740 Never Again!

After a difficult installation of this really large unit, we noticed that it was very slow in brewing the coffee compared to the old B&D unit. In addition, it is so large that there is really little usable counter space under it.

We have been using the unit daily for a year now and are not happy. In addition to the slow brewing that never improved, in order to clean the carafe in the dishwasher, the flip top must be removed.

Over the past year, this removal on a daily basis has caused the anchor pin retainers on the plastic top to become very worn so the top now just falls off when you tip the carafe. Also, the plastic top developed very fine cracks in it (like crazing) after 8 months of use.

After 11 months the entire top plastic section has now separated from the handle. The whole plastic top is now held together with tie wraps. I spoke with B&D support and they pointed out the warranty did not apply to the carafe at all and I would have to buy a new one.

The cost of the new carafe "assembly" plus shipping (over $30) would be half of what I originally paid for the whole unit, so I did not opt for this "solution". I now notice that the white unit is no longer available on the B&D WEB site.

My solution to the problem will be to use the unit a bit more then junk it and get a Mr. Coffee for $20.
